Hello, can anyone give my some tips about coming to Oz for Buff hunt in Darwin. The oufitter will sort out import permits, ill be flying to Brisbane then onto Darwin. What are customs like in Oz?? Here flying within New Zealand we can just turn up at the airport with firearms, just tell them at check-in that you have a firearm and ammo, they get you to fill in a couple of forms and you are done. How hard is it to fly within Oz with firearms?? I was going to bring a hunting knife too, which should not be a problem should it?? Thanks James

TP
Your outfitter will have all the hoopla details you will need to jump through no doubt.
I do not know the details required for obtaining a temporary Australian Firearms licence. Firearms licences are issued by the indiviidual states so the outfitter should arrange a licence through the NT I would logically guess.
When u arrive the airline will hold the firearm at the baggage office until a customs officer accompanies you to a check table.
Firearm is to be disabled or broken down [ie bolt removed from action etc.
Ammo must be carried separate to firearm.
Qantas needs advice of flights and firearms plus ammo [max 5kg] and has to be cleared by their dangerous goods office in sydney.
Check before buying your tickets with any other carrier what is their firearms policy.
Knife will be OK but make sure it is packed in checked baggage.

TP - you will need to apply for a Visitors firearms permit from the State you are visiting - I think they are transferable interstate ??? - and a B709A form from the police in the state you will be visiting . Your hunting outfitter should have all this information at hand , and you need to get onto applying in plenty of time . The wheels of beauracracy turn slowly in all countries , and somewhere as as retarded in relation to firearm things as Australian Beauracracy may well need more time than other places...

You should also contact the Airline you will be using and find out their requirements for travel . The IATA regulations state that you can carry up to 5 kgs of sporting ammo , appropriately packed , and a variety of firearms , but all at the whim of the actual captain of the 'plane....Get approval from th airline , carry a copy of that approval and if you have trouble at check-in ask for a supervisor. The check-in staff are at the bottom of the information chain and often simply dont know what the policy is on firearms and ammo . Expect a delay at check-in - so get there early....

I am surprised there hasnt been more information from the aussie guys on this one .....
