Has anyone hunted either of these? I am interested in these two along with pigs and water buffalo. Where is the best location to go. I would like to plan a trip in the next three years.

You would need to go to the Coburg Peninsular for the banteng. Water bull and bulls are found in most parts of the top end. I don't know how many out fitters have access to banteng as they are mostly on Aborigional land, so you'll have to do some checking.

A bloke called Max Davidson offers banteng, I don't know his details however I'll track them down for you.

Arnhemland is the best area in the Top End to hunt water buffalo IMO. A number of outfitters operate on Aboriginal land in Arnhemland.

I have hunted with two: Australian Buffalo Hunters (Graham Williams) and Hunt Australia (Matt Graham). I can recommend both.

Pigs are not as plentiful in Arnhemland as elsewhere and are largely targets of opportunity when hunting other game. A station hunt is probably more productive for pigs perhaps as a separate add-on hunt. Buffalo can also be hunted still free range on some stations but probably are less plentiful than in Arnhemland.

Banteng are hunted in the Coburg Peninsula which is National Park and Aboriginal Land. Many outfitters can arrange banteng hunts for you there. Two outfitters have the actual rights. One is mentioned above (Max / Peter Davidson). The other slips my mind at present (???)

Waterfowl during season is another thing to consider, plus other ferals. Some deer species can be hunted behind wire in a game farm. Fishing too should not be forgotten.

Breton Hurt was the other outfitter with privledges on the Coburg, but a storm wiped out much of his camp and he was asking if others had an interest in buying it, so I don't know if he still has it or not. Bantang are pricey due to the trophy fee on the Coburg. Bush bulls are nearly the same animal, but much cheaper!

Well I really need to have the banteng part of the hunt. I see now that the buffalo and the banteng are not too far apart. I still have two years to plan the trip.

Now, where in Australia do I leave the wife and kid while I hunt?

Leave them in Darwin, lots to see and do OR take them with you. They may like the Aussie bush and can proberly do some fishing/Bush walking while you hunt.

Two very good options.

If you are flying say to Gove for your hunt, you fly either Sydney - Cairns - Gove and the plane continues onto to Darwin. OR Syndey - Darwin - Gove, and the plane continues onto to Cairns.

Leave the wife and kids in Cairns or Darwin for a seven day holiday.

Cairns has the Great Barrier Reef, great beaches, the Daintree Rainforest, Aboriginal attractions, tropical island resorts, Port Douglas etc.

Darwin is really really boring. But from Darwin your family can do a short tourist holiday to Katherine River Gorge, Kakadu - Yellow Waters, Aboriginal cave paintings and performances, Adelaide River Jumping crocodiles etc.

Or they can come out to camp with you.

Hunt Australia plus other outfitters hunt from Gove.

NitroX ,
A croweater calling Darwin boring ? lol
When I was there it was full of backpackers . Definitely not boring . Eeker

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

They are roughly the same size as smaller scrub cattle. I'd guess the mature bulls at 400-450 kilos. They used to have a full mount in the natural history museum in Darwin.

They have some Gaur, but I don't think you can hunt them. The FFWS changed the rules on Gaur recently.

Tons of Gaur in Texas that can't be shot.

Gaur hybrids could though, cross one on a Bison, and whack him in the summertime. No one would know the difference.!

Thanks but I would know. Not my style. I am sure you were joking about telling them it is a banteng but I probably will shoot a scrub bull if the opportunity is there.

You are right about gaur. Only hybrids can be shot. Shooting a pure strain animal will get you in deep with the feds now.

Very proffessional.

Australia
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

This has nothing to do with what others know or think. This is me looking for gaur and banteng. I do not want to hunt TX guar on a ranch. Something about it that isnt right FOR ME. If US FWS has changed the rules why? There must be something they do not like about the use of these beasts.

Gaur are a very endangered species, over all of their natural range, so likely a deal was made to put them on the protected list.
And yes I was joking about shooting a scrub bull and calling it a bantang. I would like to hunt bantang myself, but the the high cost has put me off. In Australia the bantang are all in fenced areas, including the Coburg, because they can interbreed with cattle and in some of the fenced in areas, I have seen bantang of some odd colours, which suggests that they have already been doing that.

Maybe the Guar in the US are being used for genetic stock?

That is the idea. Preserving the species and the diversity of genetic material. The change in the ruling came as the result of a lawsuit and the interpretation of the endangered species act. That is why USFWS changed the rule.

When I asked for an alternative on Banteng, I meant a cheaper alternative to the Coburg.

Mike, I can line you up on a bantang hunt in the NT, that isn't on the Coburg. I'll check on what it would cost if you are interested. Would you be interested in hunting anything else on the same trip?
