We have been seriously slack here , no hunting for months. Starting to suffer withdrawl symptoms...

This is a pic of Matt with his last victim , shot on the run - through the back of the head - with our Martini Cadet 22-K Hornet. Range about 50 metres , I think the boy got the bigger surprise when the goat got up under his feet and took off rapidly.

Hope you all have a great New Year - and post some hunting pics again , its been sooo long .....

nice work by the youngster, with a very nice rifle.
..........teach him to smile ( not like his old man) ........should be justified in being pleased with himself after a well executed shot like that.

You are so right James - it is a crap time of year for serious hunting. Still able to harass the bunnies and bag the occasional goat , and get in a little practice with the 12ga on a turkey or two

Not dry yet Matt.

We have had a fair bit of rain in the last ten days , so everything is green as. maybe by the end of March it will be drier, thats out traditional dry season.

Living on the western side of the country we seldom get really dry anyway . Never dry enough that it affects the pest control hunting any way.

Well done the young fella tu2. It does look strange see a goat surrounded by lush grass. Most of our goats are taken in dry rocky places.

Moved from WA due to work ....

Licencing here is considerably less stressing than in WA.

Same place , differant goat - yesterday afternoon.

40 metres , unalarmed goat walking away from us , very cool and calmly raised rifle and shot billy in the back of the head...

This child of mine is becoming alarmingly efficient ...... not bad for nearly 14 ....

rifle is an ex-Australian Cadet action . Complete with kangaroos stamped on the receiver . It has a fairly heavy barrel with minimal taper , and is chambered in 22 K-Hornet , although we use standard Hornet ammo and try to save the brass so we can reload later. I tend to accumulate Hornet ammo as and when it appears so we use a mix of brands. Doesnt seem to matter to the rifle anyway.
What else ? Its a very small rifle , I did have an even shorter butt stock on it for when Matt was smaller , but have changed back to the original butt. Its still pretty short but not uncomfortable to shoot. Has a Tasco 3-9 scope thats been on it for years.
Thats about it .

Muzza, Thanks for the info on the rifle. Very nice. i don't think I have ever seen one here in Kentucky. Would love to have one too. I wonder if the action is big enough for a 30-30 size cartridge? I had a 22-K hornet on ruger #3 on=ce and shot a bunch of groundhogs here. It was really great and easy to reload. I am glad your son enjoys hunting. Mine is just getting ready for his first deer hunt in 2013. Thanks for the info and good shooting.

The answer is yes. I have a Steyr Martini in .450/.400 that was made in about 1898 for the Boer wars.

Actually a really nice cartridge to use in a cadet action is a 30-30-380. This is the 30-30 Winchester cartridge with the neck expanded to take 380 cal projectiles - or 9mm pistol projectiles...

I have a friend in Melbourne who has just that rifle and its a little honey.
