They're popular with the Sambar doggers down here. .30-06 and .35 Whelen are the most common cals.

Many years ago I owned a model 760 in .30/06 and have always regretted selling it. However, I already have one of the 7600 Police models on my shopping list and am really just waiting for a permit to acquire and then I'll commit myself to one. I think it will make a brilliant pig gun for amongst the lignum and I'll be adding a Trijicon Reflex dot sight to make it even faster to aim.

What are the police models worth? Been toying with the idea of getting one myself.

Personally i'de never buy a pump action hunting rifle because they may not be as reliable as a bolt action in the field, they have more parts that can break, jam or bind up,they may have feeding issues & honestly I dont believe you can cycle the action & get an accurate shot off any faster than a bolt action. Although i've never used a pump action centerfire i've used pump shotguns & rimfires,i've had feeding problems & occasionally had the action stick/jam with both types.

"I dont believe you can cycle the action & get an accurate shot off any faster than a bolt action." I have to respectfully disagree Tumbo. One thing in it's favour is your grip never changes when cycling the action. It never leaves your shoulder, thats got to help a fast second shot. Also spitzers feed far better than 12 guage or rimfire. I have been timed(got the trophy)getting 8 shots off in 4.08 seconds.Marlin 1894 Cowboy,.38's.Hit all 8 steel targets, rifle never left my shoulder.

They are fast but a good friend has one with a LER scope 10 round mag fast mag release triger the whole works done to it one point is once you get the 10 round option the mags will need to be modified to feed well also a bit of tuning is needed after 500 rounds. The other major problem is after 20 rounds of quick fire the heat in the barrel is huge and extraction sometimes will not work at least with this gun (the chamber is VERY rough). I only know of a few people who will shoot 20 rounds in 20 seconds score a hit on a pig with every round I'll stick to my 45-70 9 round marlin and hit a single pig 9 times

Karl you can get the 7600 in 35 Whelen through a special run.. It's listed here. A 9.3x62 would be no problem to do, just would need to fit a new barrel. I think the Police version would be real nice in say .358 Winchester... I wonder how hard it would be to make it take M-14 mags, You could call it a "California Assault Rifle" Toolmaker

7600's in .35 Whelen are a regular stock line with the Oz distributor for Remington [Raytrade].

Karl, I own a .243 7600 in black/synthetic with a 2-7 VX 1 scope. A light and well balanced outfit for most of the stuff we encounter in NSW. Very, very accurate, very fast and easy to carry all day if need be. I've usually dropped 3 pigs or grasshoppers before my mates and their bolt actions are ready to pull the trigger on their 2nd. Don't bother with the 10 shot mags that are available, they are crap and don't feed properly. You're better off with a second factory 4 shot mag. Only drawback is they are noisey to cycle and they like it hard and fast so if you have to stalk something and be quiet about doing so, you need to carry the gun loaded and rely on a safety that only blocks the trigger. In these situation I prefer a bolt action. The trigger is also on the heavy side with a bit of creep but you don't notice it in the field. I wouldn't dare to have it adjusted for safety reasons. A good rifle that performs exacty as it was designed. Cheers Boof....

Thanks for the replies guys. Boof, yes I had heard the 10 shot mags could have problems. One guys up here says there is a company in Australia that can make 2 10 shots a 20 shot and fix the feeding problems(which may be a spring problem?) so I am trying to find out more information on this. Karl, The problem with the larger capacity mags are a combination of poor design as they don't feed the cartridges at the correct angle because their leading egde sits at a different height than that of the factory mags, and in the .243 (same mag as .308) the cartridges move forward in the mag under recoil. After firing a couple of shots, 2 or 3 loaded rounds will pop up into the open action because they are not sitting back far enough under the higher spring tension. I have played around trying to modify the thing with spacers and different springs and varied the angles on the retension lips, but it would never feed as reliably as the factory mag. I finally fixed the problem with house brick. I'm a 100 bucks poorer but figure it's better to have 4+1 that I know will cycle properly over 10 that will equate to 2 away then a possible jam. The other thing to consider is the 7600's have light profile barrels and heat up quick. If you did manage to get 10 fast shots out of one of these, it would be smokin'. If I need to get off 5, and that is rare, mags empty and I know it's time to let it cool down. I would imagine 10 straight out of an 06 and you could use it to boil your billy. Cheers, Boof....
