Most helihunted animals are not shot from the helicopter, they are shot from the ground after the animals have been located, assessed then driven or herded from the helicopter,
Its simple enough for a client to shoot an animal from the ground after its has been chased for maybe 15 to 60 minutes.

Its a really simple sentence to get your head around.

Using a helicopter to intentionally influence animal behaviour is not hunting.

Well then.....that's essentially the same as shooting them from the heli if you ask me. Very tough to get one's head around. Roll Eyes

Thats what happens when facts get in the way of political wheeling & dealing.

Ministers sure hate it when their decisions have been overturned .................been there done that.............when they cool down & the reality of public support sinks in , she will probably be spinning the story to claim credit for the change come election time & her people start to count votes on issues.
A dozen or so votes & the political support they might have provided to the party machinery aint gonna get her re-elected.

you've won the battle over the concessions , but the war is won in the detail of the GAC Bill when it eventually gets to parliament.

Ministers always have the final say on appointments to Advisory Councils............ but if they are seen to 'stack' an advisory council with 'toadies' they risk the wrath of the public affected & create a disaffection issue for themselves at election time ............few ministers are completely stupid, & take their 'lumps' when they come along with a well organised campaign.

You are the guy who wished for me to lose interest in hunting before my body fails me, I would prefer if you stayed out of my threads. You make no contribution best stay in Australia where you belong. New Zealand will not be good for you.

Ahhhh .........Weathered............
You are long on enthusiasm & commitment, short on reality of government function.
no amount of enthusiasm can counter a lack of understanding of the reality of government function.

You'll find a quote in an earlier post about the many who have been passed over due to a lack of reality in Gov't function in the final wash-up of legislative change as it moves into the future.

It seems like others...........I'm not at all sure of your personal position on helicopters entering the conservation estate in any manner at all.

There seems to be an underlaying thread of:-
if you can't walk the whole way in the conservation estate then Piss Off .... the conservation estate should be a completely helicopter free area.

that seems to be at odds with the vast majority of comments in the thread .

As for:-
"You are the guy who wished for me to lose interest in hunting before my body fails me".........

Thats only in the context of a happier later life , sir, ..........if you cannot see the other side of the coin when you cannot physically do what you currently are able & obviously much passionate about.

20;20 vision is easy in hindsight.........being prescient is a different deal, both in passions & government function. they both have an absolute reality about them.

I wouldn't want that clarity of hindsight see you end up bitter & twisted about what could have been in the longer run because of shortsightedness.

Physical ability & disability is only one misadventure away........plenty of 'hunters' have discovered that to their misfortune.
I repeat:-

you've won the battle over the concessions , but the war is won in the detail of the GAC Bill when it eventually gets to parliament.

Have a great New Year .

Denis, I think you'd better go back and reread Weathereds posts over the last few years again. He's been nothing but consistent and its quite clear where he stands re use of choppers on the public estate. I too, probably think he doesn't have to restate it for every single person who arrives, and quite frankly its irrelevant.
As for physical ability & disability, Both Weathered and I are owners of conditions that may see our time in the mountains shortened. Thats just life. The argument of needing it easier due to inability is Bullshit of the highest order, and when I can't climb the mountains, I won't be sad or angry, Ill be happy I did what I did and take up fishing. Its called acceptance.
Fact is Weatherds done more than any other individual to get this issue this far and really doesn't need a theorist or intellectual from across the ditch teaching him how to suck eggs.

No problem recognising his driving force in getting the issue to where it is........an outstanding commitment .

The primary point being made is that its one thing to beat Government over the head about an issue in the public media to get them to act........but an entirely different game to work with Gov't in developing a broader longterm solution (hunting administration in this particular case).

no theory in engaging with Govt from this keyboard & the reality of solutions......pure practical experience offered there ( from multiples of engagements).
If it comes across as a tutorial on sucking eggs , I'm sorry........its not meant that way.......merely a statement of what's worked for me & my observations of the key elements in legislative solutions.

He He.........government & its bureaucracies is a trickier beast than anyone will engage with rifle or rod. Many are those who have engaged with them on issues from both within Gov't & outside it who have been outmanouvered in the final legislative process.

Hunting is my second love, fishing the first.
the hunting part of finding the quarry in both is pretty much the same, what happens after contact is achieved is a tad different ....its more drawn out in the fishing as a physical battle............
fishing ain't a bad sport to adapt to when you have been obliged to accept physical limitations to your hunting capabilities.
( theorising about acceptance of human frailties is a bit different to actually living with human physical limitations........the actual acceptance is the hard part for many ....the time between encountering a limitation and reaching a lack of energy & will to do what you used to, can be a tough time..... He He)

Its just practical experience that being offered, same as back in the '80s, when your Gov't paid for some of your commercial fishermen to come & fish on my tuna longline boat to see what & how we were doing it to develop the fishery in NZ.
Success breeds success & sure beats developing your own strategies from the ground up & discovering what you should have done better in hindsight from your own efforts.
I always thought ( & still do) that was the great thing about forums, sharing experiences to help each other in achieving objectives from hearing about successful strategies.
The information in posts is there to be used or not used by the reader as they see fit.

Gidday Guys,

If I were to drive around a marathon course and then get out of the car 100m from the finish line to run across does that mean I have completed a marathon and am eligible for the certificate.

Seems like a similar situation here. If I am too old/unfit/infirm to hunt in the hills I can't hunt I just have to accept that. However I do think that I will probably die through pushing myself too hard one day while out chasing tahr hopefully in 40 years or so.

No I can't run marathons anymore so I do something I am much more passionate about, I hunt.

Happy Hunting

Hamish
