Appears that my company will be sending me Mandurah Australia,I was excited at first but after looking at some of the gun laws in Australia I'm much less excited now, seems that the goverment just does not trust the individual with firearms and this is a hard thing to swallow for a South Texas boy who reloads and shoots off the back porch.
Just wanted to get some local info on the hunting and shooting sports in this area.
It seems that importing arms is not viable, how about purchasing locally once I'm there ??

How long will you be here for ?

The rang is at Mandurah.

However WA has crap gun laws so someone from WA will be able to advise you.

But nothing stopping you getting on a plane and flying somewhere else to do a hunt.

Plenty of Pigs, buffalo, deer etc around Darwin / NT.

Or a hop skip and a jump to New Zealand.

See as much of the place as you can would be my suggestion.

If I accept this assignment it will be for at least one year while I train a local to fill the position.
Problem is that I'm a long way from home, with return trips just once a year. Looks like hunting will be off the table for the next year, shame as I hear there is some right nice hunting in this neck of the woods.
I'm not comfortable borrowing firearms to hunt with

Yeah mate you can import or buy longarms once you have a permit but that can take a bit of time, even for a citizen. WA has crap laws but do not judge the rest of Australia by that standard, even though all states have crap laws compared to Texas.

G'Day Gerri, I live in W.A.,and once you learn how to go about it , it's not so bad. First thing is to join the S.S.A.A.(Sporting Shooters of Australia association) or Field and Game ..once you are a member you can join a shooting club then apply for a ''Club ''license. there are many different types of clubs, some are range only and others are hunting clubs There is a Peel District Hunting for Conservation club Who blast varmints which become pests etc,If you P.M. me I will give you a contact. The main reason for the Police requesting S.S.A.A. or Field and Game association Membership is that if you have a firearm related accident or hunting accident, then you are covered by that associations insurance Policy of several Milliom Bucks.I own many rifles for different uses both range and hunting ,and I hunt all over the world as well as in OZ. Go to''lefties'on this forum and look at ''Dhufish .505'' to see some of my guns'These other guys from other states have only heard of the horror stories , but I live here and it's not so bad. After you join up and allthat, you can import your own guns from U.S.A. and I will also tell you how to do that, but first you must have a ''Lawful Reason '' to have them. Best Wishes from Dhufish..

Hi Jerry

Most states have a 'visitors firearms license' ( its part of the generic national licensing arrangements that each State built its legislation around )that will recognise your existing US licensing.
( can't speak for the specifics of WA )

Its a different situation for locals

If you are thinking of taking up the WA assignment I would fire off some general questions to the WA Firearms Registry & get your information about visitor situation from the 'horse's mouth'.........they are going to be the ones who process your application anyway & you can attach any advice they give you with your application.( P2P contact helps )

you also need to find out the US end of the arrangements you need to make to get your firearms ( just one or 2 ) out of & back into the US as your property.

a large part of the OZ end of the importation & re-export is smoothed by having permission to use them somewhere.
This is handled by outfitters organising a specific hunt in most cases.
In your case finding possibly someone in your organisation in WA or a friend who can get you formal written permission to hunt on private property is a starting point in having the right info to tick the right boxes with your application.
there are issues with period of time for visitors licensing & firearms registration etc with long term appointments. The visitor licensing etc is primarily aimed at people flying in for a hunt ( days/weeks) & flying out again.

If you take up the appointment I would follow up the requirements for vistors firearms licence well before you leave US as it will probably jump you thru most of the hoops in getting Oz licensing to use a gun .
Whether its your gun is a separate matter you can follow up as a separate exercise.

Most of the guys that take long term appointments in Oz just organise the visitor firearms license part & suffer with using either an outfitters guns or borrow while they are here as the longterm importation of your own guns is a PITA.and the re-importation when you go back to the US after a long term appointment has its own hassles.

other than our lack of a Bill of Rights, anything like the 2nd Amendment , & ridiculous gun laws ...............Oz is a great place

Good luck.
