Just bought an Akubra with this name, and found it is the home of Australia's opal industry. Who's been there? Interesting place? Looks a might hot.

Stayed there in 2001 on our way to live in the NT. Stayed underground in a nice little B&B. It was stinking hot out side when we checked in, underground it was quiet and a constant 23 degrees without air con. When we woke up next morning in was sleeting and blowing a gale. There was gravel on the beds where it blew down the air vents. The place we stayed at had a church and Sunday school under the accommodation. In the roof of the sunday school was a bed of opalized pippies (clams for you US folk). People living in town under ground aren't allowed to mine BUT they can "add new rooms" to their houses and of course keep what ever opal they find. Some folks even have pools in their under ground homes.

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

First time there was back in the erly 80's. Parked in the caravan park, put up tent, had 2min shower and walked out into a duststorm. Had to use the compass to find the tent-15 yards away and the pub.

There are some that live above ground but below ground housing? is as bakes said. if I lived there it would be underground.

Some of the locals there have never seen rain hehehe.

Is that the area that is supposed to have a Opal mafia who control the mining? I've heard horror stories from the 60s & 70s.

It's a really nice town. Friendly people. Safe. The Greek restaurant there is incredible. It is the best food I've ever eaten (in Australia). Worth a look.
