I am inquiring to find out if handgun hunting is still allowed in Australia. I would like to hunt buffalo down there, but I want to use a handgun.

NO. There are grey area style exceptions, like a Primary Producer having a handgun for stock distruction, but for the average schmuck sauntering around anywhere except an approved pistol range with a handgun, its a big fat NO.
