20+ years ago I was in the US Navy and while deployed, we moored alongside the HMNZS Tui on two separate occasions (Phonepe 1991 and Guadalcanal 1992). The RNZN sailors were some of the greatest shipmates I've ever met. While touring the boardroom of the Tui, we were introduced to a bottle of Royal New Zealand Navy Rum, 'brewed exclusively for the Royal New Zealand Navy'. That rum holds some timeless memories for me. I was wondering if bottles of RNZN Rum are available in NZ and if perhaps it's just re-packaged Pussers or Appletons? Anyway, I would love to find a bottle. ----------------------------------------------------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. The New Zealand Navy was the last navy to give out a daily ration of rum but ended that in 1990. I don't believe that authentic NZ Royal Navy Rum is made anymore but I'd gladly be proven wrong. In the navy,in the navy..we sailed the seven sea`s RUM,SODOMY and the LASH haaaaaaaaa rum or no rum! BTW Old Winnie is the man responsible... CHURCHILL'S description of the Royal Navy is included in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations as having appeared in the book, Former Navy Person, by Sir Peter Gretton. The Oxford Dictionary suggests that Churchill's phrase should be compared with naval phrases dating from the 19th century - 'Rum, bum and bacca' and 'Ashore, it's wine, women and song, aboard it's rum, bum and concertina'. It looks as though here, as elsewhere, Churchill took an earlier quotation and improved upon it. In The Irrepressible Churchill, compiled by Kay Halle (Robson Books, 1985), Churchill is said to have used the phrase in 1913, when he was First Lord of the Admiralty. According to 'an ear-witness', he was having trouble with some of his admirals at a strategy meeting. One of them accused him of having impugned the traditions of the Royal Navy, provoking the reply: 'And what are they? They are rum, sodomy and the lash'. Edward Hewlett, Bexhill-on-Sea, E Sussex. Well this thread just took an unexpected turn, wasn't expecting it to turn into a conversation about sodomy! On another note, something that I learned about the Australian Navy, don't ever get into a drinking contest with them, I am pretty sure that I lost that bet, though I wouldn't be able to swear to it. ----------------------------------------------------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. A bit of a research shows that until the late 60's the rum was the Jamaican origin Black Heart rum and then from the late 60's on was supplied by Bundaberg in Australia, reverting back to Jamaican rum again just as the practice was discontinued in 1990. Based on your timeline it was likely the 148% over-proof Bundaberg rum (98% raw alcohol) that you were drinking. Perhaps best you didn't remember everything that went on that day

148% over-proof does not compute, I'm afraid. For some reason the proof system seems to double the percentage, whereby 148 proof would be about 74%, about the same strength as the strongest old Inner Circle OP I can remember. While that one was a bit rough, some of the milder, old Inner Circle OPs were ambrosial - something that could never be said of Bundaberg.

Any of you tried Indian rum? The old stalwart is Old Monk. You do find it in NZ bottle shops. Other good rums are Hercules (lower end) and Whitefield - very top end. Sikkim & Bhutan rum are also good. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."
