Got a new .17HMR gettin' made up.
Ruger 22mag Semi Auto action.
Volquartsen fluted alloy bull barrel.
Supresser
Laminated stock.
Leupold scope on top.

Bunnies watch out, no longer safe under 200 yards.

BTW: any locals interested in a Rabbit cull on 31st December. You're allowed 1 deer for every 300 rabbits you shoot. No shotage of rabbits round here. Got two teams already,(Gun City CHCH and us locals.) looking for one or two more.
Accomodation in the woolshed.
Rabbits going to petfood, and boosting the station social fund.

Damn - not local enough!

That new rifle will do some things really well and a lot not-very-well at all. Cant say as I am convinced of their merit yet but in still conditions like you have it will certainly bust a bunny at long range. Should be fun.

Gidday Tim,

I would be interested but have to work that weekend. Let us know if you want to do it again but will need some notice to get the body armour sorted first if the Tipple gang are anywhere nearby. Those boys chop through the ammo faster than a battalion of Yank infantry.

Have a good time mate

Happy Hunting

I had some fun a few days back. Went out with a couple senior fellows to shoot some rabbits. We did some target shooting while the sun was up and I shot pretty well and was elected to do the gunning on a spotlight hunt. Being from Canada where loaded guns in a vehicle is a no,no and shooting after dark is also illeagle, I felt like a poacher to begin with. But it was fun and productive and I got on to it. I took 15 shots at 12 rabbits and got all 12. All but three with clean head shots. Cooked up a couple small ones (like the little ones in the pic) and they were sure good eating.

Now when I get back to Alberta I'll have to unlearn my new found skill.

Good choice, you will love the 17HMR, they really are a good cartridge.
They kill out of all proportion to their size, just dynamite on bunnies, hares and foxes out to 150.
I'm betting you will never use your 22lr/22mag again, I don't, my Sako Finnfire just gathers dust in the safe these days, I would rather use my $300 17HMR single shot Handi-Rifle over the 22lr any day.
Its simply light years ahead of the other two rimfire rounds in performance.

Only downsides I can see are the cost of the ammo and the inabiltiy to see where a missed shot actually lands sometimes. Not much dust or debris thrown when the bullet lands so it's difficult to see where the shot goes occassionally.

This whole "won't shoot thru grass" or "gets blown around in the wind" thing is pure BS in my experience.
I've shot 2 foxes thru knee high grass, when all I could see was a silhouette of the animal, they didn't know what hit them.
And as for the wind thing, way overstated IMO. It's miles ahead of any rimfire .22 you will use in that regard anyway.

The rabbit shoot sounds great, you'd want to be a LONG way away from the Tipples though

Who is putting this together and what is the rough cost?
I am thinking of an identical rifle along with the suppressor to replace my 10/22 I have over there.

A gun nut in Christchurch is building it for me, will let you know how it goes, hopefully try it out this weekend. Price tag is going to be round $2,000.00 Spendy but will pay for itself in reasonable short time, as we're selling the bunnies. Shooting 150 or so a week at $2-3.50 each.

G'day Muzr (Mustn't confuse you with the other Muzza)
Got wethered off for the rabbit shoot but still went out and plugged a few. We shot about 300 or so. The Gun City blokes shot a couple of hundred and 3 or 4 deer.
I manged to shoot 38 with 43 shots from the .17 in just over 1 hour, walking the riverbed.
Come on down anytime and have a crack at a few (Preferably quite a few. As we have more than plenty about.)
Right now I'm in SLC, fending off the mormons. Just spent 5 days in Idaho chasin' pussy (Cougar), but so far didn't connect. Going back for another crack on monday.

Tim,

If you're coming for SCI, you should stop here in Phx and pick up the 7mm SAUM 700TI I still have. That way you can own a matched set! -TONY

Problem is, I can pick it up and probably wouldn't want to put it down again. Even bigger problem is me getting it out of USA. No problem to get it into NZ, but out of USA?? I haven't worked out how to do that yet, with out loosing an arm 'n' leg. Anybody got any clues? Only way I know of is to get a USA resident to bring it with them when they come down to NZ to hunt i.e. They're allowed to take guns out and they don't have to take them back.

Hi Tim
look up www.simpsonltd.com as they handle exporting for me - ive brought out about 6 rifles for myself and others so far - they can take a while but are cheap on the freight side of the ledger compared with some companies. Should cost about USD$200 for the export permit anf USD$135 for freight.
much cheaper if you can get a US resident to bring one out with them.

The custom build just didn't work out. Three visits back to the gunsmith, and still persistent jamming and misfires. So passed and sent it back. This week had a new Volquartsen custom, bought out. Awesome. 9 shot semi auto, custom build based on Ruger WMR 10/22 action.
Works flawlessly and already hard at work.

The barrel is real heavy, mounted in a Hogue Stock and with all the Volquartsen custom whizzos. Have mounted my Surefire Tactical Light rig on it. So now all set up for serious bunny bustin'
Shot about 30 or so today to test it out. Out to 215 yards.

Yeah 1" haevy as hell, but steady as a rock. Shoots a 1/2 inch group at 100 yards out of 9 shots at least 3 were through the same hole. Not as tight out at 200 yards, although haven't tested in windless conditions yet.

Anybody on this forum got any thoughts on the most accurate HMR ammo out at 200 yards.
