After my last attempt at a big bore (we know how that went ) I still have a desire to own one. I have a Brazilian mauser action that I was going to make up into a 8x57, Ron E kindly sent me a mil barrel (thanks mate )I'm thinking building a big bore in it and am thinking the 404 Jeffery. Does anyone out there own one? what work is required on the action? It won't be a classic looking rifle, it will wear a boyds stock as it will be built to a budget (small). What do you guys think? ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

check the length of the cartridge you want to use . It may be too long for your action , and lengthening the action to suit would take cheap to a whole new level. Anything that requires lots of gunsmith time will equal expensive. Why not look at a factory rifle in 375 Hand H instead ? Or go to the Ruger 375 , or 416 , that uses a standard length case which will fit your 98 action. ________________________ Old enough to know better

My other thought was the 9.3x62 or 64. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

The 9.3x62 will fit the standard action. I have one built pre-WW11 by Germania , the forerunners of Voere ( I think). It is a nice , light , pleasant to shoot rifle. ________________________ Old enough to know better

I did my 404 Jeffery on a standard ex mil Brazilian Mauser and it didn't take very much at all to get the cartridge to fit.

I have a 9.3X62 on a M98 original Oberndorf by Simson - pre 1912. I have also seen & handled Von Gruff's 404J & it is a beautiful rifle. I was very tempted to buy it but in the end I decided to go for the CZ in 416 Rigby. In your case the 9.3X62 would be the easiest way to go. Just screw on a MAB or Lothar Walther barrel and may be modify the magazine block for cartridge length and change the follower to a 30'06 size. Not a big bore but still a great round and perfectly adequate for Aussie buf IMO. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

If you really want to go into the elephant numbers, you might consider the 425 Westley Richards, if only because the rebated rim could save big bolt alterations. I'd be surprised if there's much meat left in a military barrel after a .435-inch groove is cut, though. Everything above a 35 Whelen or possibly 9.3x62 would come with magazine width/feeding problems, of course, that may never be solved well enough to risk using against dangerous game.

Not really a big bore. If you don't want a Rigby go the 404 route. Standard K98 action can be made to fit with out to much problem. Certainly a go anywhere shoot anything round.
