I have flicked through a couple of chapters already and it is a very good read thus far. LOTS of hunting and info and not too much of the 'ancient history' political/legal BS.

By the way - AR member Bill Quimby (billrquimby) edited the book and helped Bob put it together. Well done Bill!!

Just ordered mine too using the paypal option.

I only hunted with Bob once and it was an absolutely unique experience.

Among other things:

-Went through several thousand rounds each of .308 shooting at live targets including whacking 606 donkeys (actual ground count).

-Had a face off with a 'scrub bull' that soaked up several 375 H&H rounds and was trying to mount a charge at 25 yards. Bob remained calm and handed me his .458 WM to put an end to things.

-Watched a fly over migration of a couple million (?) huge fruit bats

-From our Darwin hotel room watched the Australian Defense Forces staging for a so-called 'humanitarian mission' to East Timor in Darwin Harbor. Bullshit, their ships were combat loaded and they were going to bring back the good folks stranded there by whatever means necessary.

-Got into a shootout with a very serious snake in the camp outhouse. We were all excited about having an encounter with a bad snake and the ensuing shootout....Bob (once again)remained calm and seemed more worried about the holes put in the outhouse equipment.

-Bob arranged for us to take our trophy skulls (water buffalo, scrub bulls, pig teeth, etc) back with us as luggage. But in the day proceeding our flight out we had to soak the skulls in our hotel room bathtub to take care of some crawly bugs that were developing. The cleaning crew came to our room while this was going on and were greeted with quite a sight when they pulled the shower curtain back.

Certainly lots of memories from one 10-day trip! I look forward to reading his book.

Thanks, Matt.

It was an honor and a pleasure to help Bob get his great stories into print. I've known the guy for more than 30 years, but I was surprised to see how literate he is when I worked with him on this project. Few of the books I've "edited" actually were written by the guys whose names appear on the cover, but this book definitely was.

hey Bill, Bob was a fairly well known outdoor writer in his day...and a perfectionist too.

hey there Matt!!

Shots were fired in East Timor too. Doubt they will be the last shots Australia lays down on the Indos either.

Matt: One of the best known U.S. gunwriters in the last half of the 20th century was virtually illiterate. He couldn't spell and he wrote as if he thought grammar was the mother of someone's mother. I wish I would have saved his query letters. He was able to sell stories because some magazine editors were willing to rewrite his stuff. (I wasn't.)

Written a couple of magazine articles myself and pretty sure some will shake their heads at my grammar. Unfortunately it is a black art for me, one I never fully understood Frowner

Received my book yesterday and started on it last night. Looking forward to it.....

Cheers,
Mark.

G'Day Fella's,

Just a quick note, to say I recently received my copy of Bob's book.
Whilst I haven't had a chance to sit down and have a good read, I'm impressed with what I have seen!
An excellent book and very good value for the money!!!

Got an email from Bob today. "Penfold" hasn't been advertised or reviewed in a major magazine yet, but he says it already is selling well. I'm happy for him. It is a great book.
