Hi all,

Moved from WA to ACT and want to get my firearms transferred.

Seems like ACT is somewhat more lenient that WA, but I need to make friends and meet a landowner or tenant who can say "Yeah, this guy is welcome on my property to shoot my tractors, Herefords and chooks".

How do I go about meeting someone like that? I just don't know where to start even.

Any information gratefully received.

Try one of the deer clubs as a start, either in ACT or NSW.

Maybe ask in one of the gun shops !

Just join the SSAA or the ADA. That will give you your genuine reason to own a firearm. If you join the SSAA I think you have to attend the range a certain number of time a year (no biggy) Once you have your licence get your R licence from here http://www.gamecouncil.nsw.gov.au/

and you can book and hunt in state forrest in NSW.

Thanks to both of you.

Just a few more questions.

In WA to own a firearm, you either had to join a club that did regular shoots OF THAT TYPE of weapon, or get permission to shoot THAT calibre on a farm or station.

So if I wanted to own a 375 H&H, I had to be a member of the Big Game Rifle Club and attend a number of shoots.

If I wanted a shotgun I had to join Field and Game, who shot shotguns.

Being a member of SSAA (which I am) can I own 375, 458, 30-06 etc without actually being part of the satellite clubs?

Sorry to be so full of questions, but WA is what every gunhater wants the whole of Aus to be like, and I'm having difficulty adjusting.

No mate there is no requirment to do that. Just by being a member of the SSAA is reason enough to own a .375 or anything else thats legal. I'm not a fan of the SSAA but I'm a member of the Australian Deer Association. That gives me my genuine need and I can have whatever legal calibres I want to.

I'll add one more thing, seeing you're a member of a hunting organisation (SSAA), get yourself a NSW Game Council R licence, there's quite a few productive state forests within easy striking distance of the ACT.

Thanks you Bakes, Johnfox and 505G.

In one post I've got more info than I have in many phone calls and face-to-faces with gunshop people.

I think they can't understand what I'm asking, it's so out of their experience.

Where's my Sporting Shooter? There were addresses for the ADA in there as well .....

Thanks all for indulging me and answering questions that probably sound stupid, but I've been stunted by the WA experience. Wink

G'Day Fella's,

Yes Bren, the local ADA branch are a pretty good bunch of blokes!
I'm a F/arms dealer here in the ACT, so let me know if I can help out with the transfers.

Doh!
