About 12mths ago I brought my Lad a little Boito .410 single barrel!I might add that I get as much fun out of seeing him use it as he does,Hunting and shooting with it.I can remember as a kid in the bush we nearly all started our shotgunnig with the .410 mostly singles but some had sxs's and a few of the real lucky ones had Fireflys (#3Enfields converted to 3 shot 410).Also we all had .22 single shot Lithgos sportcos or slazengers.Which got me wondering how many other Dads are enjoing this experiance with their kids?I've also brought him a Mec600jr for reloading his own .410 ammo all times wasted wot's not spent shootin

No .410 but each of the fablous Baker boys have their own .22. The oldest has shot his allready and the young bloke will shoot his this year. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

My wife and I were not lucky enough to be blessed with children, but we do have a stack of nephews. I ended up cutting off about 2 or 3 inches off the butt of an old Norinco stock and bedding my Model 2 Brno into it. I painted it "Cammo" and the kids think it's the bees knees. No longer do they have to place the stock under their little armpits. Malcolm56

I know that poblem well.I picked up a Old rem "boys Rifle" years ago. It's about a 1906 & to get it to extract you've got to use std vel ammo.I have used it to, teach all my kids & now my stepkids.Ah for the days before Political correctness.I do miss the days of the Old Lithgos though all times wasted wot's not spent shootin

I gave ,(unoffically), my son thats just turned 8 a rifle that my father taught me to use when i was a little girl. Nothing much, just a .22 pump with open sights and he loves it. He has a go at targets now n then with my 22.250 as well. I regret selling a 410 i used to have before i had kids - so much fun. Animal Art Taxidermy.

Got one of those old Enfield conversions in the safe . Single shot though . The boy needs a few more footy seasons under his belt before he gets to try it . The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood. I haven't any kids but started off shooting with a side by side shotgun in .410. It used to belong to my Grandfather. Better to start kids with either sparrow shot in a .22 or a .410 as the range isn't as great if they shoot in the wrong direction. Best shotgunning I ever did was with that very tightly choked .410. It has long barrels, tight chokes, external hammers and th butt can be folded over against the barrels, a la a poachers gun. It used to sit under or behind the ute's seats in my Father's days along with a .22 Lithgow. Shot a lot of rabbits coming home from our bush property on quiet country roads (oops! - that was thirty years ago). I think it needs restoring and will get it officially transferred and take it over to a gunsmith.

Nitro&cc Thats music to my ears.I must admit to being guilty of knoking a few Bunnies off whilst traveling along country rds in my youth! But I can honsetly say I have never shot ,a ROO from the road on any of the properties I was Legaly permited to shoot on.... all times wasted wot's not spent shootin

DOK Of course there was the time we had a big blue flashing light filling our back window when spotlighting on a road at night. We had permission on all the properties in the area except one neighbour. We did go past his place and then around onto a small section of road to get to another gate (our own property). Then the big blue light. In the end the only thing the cops were interested in was the serial numbers on the firearms and a warning not to spotlight on the road. The fact they used our property as a training and target practice range may have helped. Actually I was annoyed they didn't check if we had permission to shoot as we were always chasing off poachers and tresspassers. Probably get a different result if one did this today.

That Nitro is a nightly pasttime of mine esp when I'm working up around Woomera,Even as far as Kingoona. It never ceases to amaze me the excuses I hear.Esp when they'e got a couple of Roos on board .I take great exception to people taking my Lively hood from me.Lets put it this way I'm not known for my sence of humour.Where ilegal hunters are concerned..(mind you there's nothing worse than sneaking onto another shooters Patch spending 1/2 the night cleaning up on his Quota. Then on the way to the chiller you find that he has been returning the favor on your patch.) all times wasted wot's not spent shootin

Clay that,s fantastic.I recon the 410 is a great little gun for a learner. We have never had the 28g,16g.In great numbers here in Auz even the 20g has only come into its own in about the last 20yrs that I can recall. As a lad it was .410 or 12g using "Blue Star" shells(apptely named...They left a large blue bruise on your shoulder & you saw stars in front of your eyes after the 2nd shot.)Older Auz shooters will remember em! all times wasted wot's not spent shootin

I'm not old but they were made by Eley and I shot thousands of them. Still got some. Were these the ones which cardboard ends or crimped plastic ends? I remember some with orange cardboard shells with white cardboard ends with the number printed on them. These were my father's stash and hoard which I blew away very quickly when starting shooting. Recently found a box of them unused which he probably wisely hid from me. I think I have some in 12 g and .410.

Were these the ones which cardboard ends or crimped plastic ends? Nitro it's been along time. But I recon they were the Mongrels. They ended up being Plastic Just before they disappeared off the market.I still have nightmares about those Old 12g rounds. My Dad used to have a Old Belgum sxs Hammer Gun (the boito,of the 50s)About 28" barrels Choked within a inch of it's life!& if I pleaded long & hard enough I was allowed to take it out (why I did this knowing what it was going to me!I can't remember?.Must have been sonme right of passage to manhood thing ) all times wasted wot's not spent shootin
