About a dozen years ago I was issued a Red Book for gun registration in New Zealand. It was suposed to be good for any rifle I chose to bring in to Country and over 4 trips I brought 4 or 5 rifles in and out. Is this thing still any good?

I suspect that was the "lifetime" license that they issues about 5-6 years ago and have now replaces with a 10 yr licence. You will need to check with Customs and/or NZ Police to see what the current requirements are for bringing in firearms as personal luggage. If you are already in NZ and want to import a firearm, thats a little different, though not too difficult. Let me know if thats what your wanting to know and I'll follow up with whats required. Grant It was issued in 1986 and I used it throughmy last trip over there in 1995. I am planning to come back this winter for a visit and look into renting a place around Taupo for 4-5 months in 07. Just wondering if the old book is still any good.

Your red licence is history . If you intend being in NZ for a short period your International Visitors Licence should cover you . If not you will need to go through the whole application procedure with the NZ Police to get a New Zealand firearms Licence. I would make an approach to the NZ Police in advance of your leaving home , just to make sure . The visitors licence is a formality done at the airport on your entry , at the Police counter. Hope that helps. ________________________ Old enough to know better

I had a so called Life Time License, but when I returned to NZ after an extended overseas stay I had to apply for the new 10 year license. That was for a New Zealande Resident, (for my sins I married a New Zealand Girl). Therefore you can assume your L T license is of little value beyond it should help when you apply for a new 10 year one, (your old one will be on the police computer records). It's my view, in your case, a visitors permit obtainable at the airport is the easiest thing to do, they are valid for a year.

All you need to know, (including downloadable forms), is here: http://www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/importing.html ...."At some point in every man's life he should own a Sako rifle and a John Deere tractor....it just doesn't get any better...."
