Magnitude 7+ earthquake on NZ's South Island overnight, tsunami warnings issued. Just had a message from some friends near Kikoura who said the ground is still shaking, the inside of their house and lodge "is a mess", no cell service, no power and they are afraid to re enter their house. They said they would give an update after sun-up. Doesn't sound real good. Karl Evans

I'm keeping a close eye on them. I have lots of friends in New Zealand including some on the South Island. 18 earthquakes stronger than 4.5 in the last 8 hours and the biggest one a 7.8. Pretty big quake , long time period for main jolt . Lots of aftershocks. Two confirmed dead in South Island . Tsunami warnings out for north/eastern coast of South Island . I am sure there will be more news as the morning progresses ________________________ Old enough to know better

I live 50 km south of Auckland. Was woken just after midnight by a strange rattle on the roof which lasted about 2 min. My daughter in Auckland felt mild shakes inside her home and rang just to make sure her mum & dad were OK. We are probably more than 600 km from where the quake originated. Checked around our home this morning but no damage it seems. Unfortunately there is damage to property and services in the upper South Island and lower North Island. I live about 50 km from Muzza. We are over 400 km from the epicenter. I was awake watching cricket and felt the quake at just past midnight. Then it got pretty violent and my wife was freaking out. My older boy came running out of his room saying the water in his fish tank was splashing all over! All safe here. But I feel really bad for the guys down south. Wellington CBD may have been hit hard. The pictures do not look good. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Yep the first 7.5 quake at only 15km deep was certainly felt here in Nelson which is not much over 200km away as the crow flies. Big long mother of a shake. Then we have had 6 more quakes classed as severe with a 6.0, 6.2 and a 6.3 thrown in for good measure. Been a rocking rolling sort of a day. Had to go out after the first one just after midnight this morning as we lost power to some of our suburbs and needed to get generators on the go for some wastewater pump stations. Youngest son had just passed through close to the quake epicentre area on the state highway about an hour earlier on his way back to where he lives south of Christchurch. Thought the wheels had come loose on his car. Luckily he was past the section on the highway that is currently closed for inspection and repair, and he got home safely. I guess we will have a few more after shocks and some will be big in the coming months. Scary but just gotta go with the flow.

They get plenty of earthquakes. They had one around 5 when I was there, a few years ago. Christchurch still recovering from the last big one took out a bunch of buildings down town. Few rebuilding lots of shops went into like the stacked up shipping containers. I hope they recover well great place.

I'm in Wellington and it was a decent quake! Largest I have experienced in 46 years. The CBD & port has some pockets of real damage. Now we have a storm hit with a lot of rain - bad timing with the broken and cracked buildings.

I received another message from my NZ friends (Mike Wilks) and his wife says just about everything inside their house/lodge that ws breakable, is broken. Still no power or water, but a friend choppered in water, the highway is covered by landslides so it may be a few days before they can do much (they are very near Kaikoura). Karl Evans

For those that know our mighty All Black rugby team, the Aussies certainly do having just had their ass kicked again by them again, the recently retired captain of the team, Richie McCaw, now part owns a helicopter business and flys choppers. He was on the news clad in red flying overalls undertaking emergency chopper support once daylight after the big quake. I bet there would be more than a few clamoring for the opportunity to fly with Sir Richie.

Richie would be the first to extend the hand of congratulation to the Irish team for their historical win over the AB's. Not for nothing is this true sportsman considered among the best of All Blacks captains, or even the best ever. The Irish would have more respect for Richie than try to belittle him over the fact of their victory in that match. Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

Rubbish, having hunted Eire a few times and hosted Irish hunters here I have a rough idea on what they are about..they have a fantastic sense of humour and would rib him mercilessly..take it when you can get it they would agree. It might be like poking a tiger with a stick too. Posts: 87 | Location: Victoria Australia | Registered: 07 September 2002

Could be right that Richie would get plenty of ribbing.... in a good natured way. The Irish people hold the AB' in high regard. Years ago, a good mate of mine was backpacking through the British Isles, taking every opportunity to sample different beers as he went. By the time he hit the Irish pubs the money was running low. But the Irish folk were happy to befriend a Kiwi lad. When people asked a bit about him he hit on the idea of telling ( i.e. lying ) to everybody that he was Sid Going's nephew. He didn't have to pay for a single beer again while he was in Ireland. He still thinks Irish folks are the best ! Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

Just got word from a mate on the South Island: As it is the NZ Navy 75 year anniversary celebrations coming up, the visiting Navies have redirected their Naval Vessels to the Coast off Kaikoura to assist with supplies and evacuation. The US are sending USS Sampson, Canadian and Australian are also sending ships along with NZ ships and all have helicopter capability. There is no port there apart from small fishing fleet. G'Day Fella's, Please to hear that the Kiwi's on this forum seem to be OK! I hear that two poor buggers were killed an 6 or more injured, as a result of the quake. I was in contact with a Kiwi mate of mine(PC), that lives 50Kms Sth West from the epicenter of this quake. He told me that the ground just didn't stop moving about for a couple of minutes. They spent the night outside, trying to sleep but the after shocks put an end to anybody sleeping. Best Wishes and keep safe to all you Kiwi's, including all of the All Blacks and Richie Mc (They are just Too Bloody Good for our "Wobblies")! Many of the trapped tourists have been moved out from Kaikoura today by NZ Navy ship and helicopters so not sure what all the other ships will do. Maybe ferry in fuel and supplies and of course their choppers can access other cut off areas. Wouldn't put it past our Aussie cousins to load up their ship with all the paua shellfish and crayfish (abalone and lobster) that have been exposed with parts of the seabed now lifted a couple of metres clear of the water, and high tail back to Oz. Just kidding, I'm sure they won't http://www.stuff.co.nz/nationa...ffles-marine-experts

Yes, some people immediately came up with that idea, but all the seismologists, astronomers and geophysicists say there is no connection.

New Zealand is situated on major seismic faults . Thats why we have a sharp spine of mountains in the South Island - the earths plates are pushing against each other . The North Island is actively volcanic as part of the Pacific Ring Of Fire , so NZ has a forever history of earthquakes and seismic activity. Maybe it is God punishing us for having the best Rugby team on the Planet ? Or maybe it is just because it is . I favour the latter theory , meself. ________________________ Old enough to know better

I remember sitting on a steep spur about three k`s upstream of the Douglas hut with Shanks and the ground was shaking like a jelly, whether it was earthquake or avalanche ol` shanks wasnt happy,we departed that spur in a bit of a hurry. There were all sorts of rumblings going on and with all that cliff country hanging above us it wasn't all that pleasant. Posts: 87 | Location: Victoria Australia | Registered: 07 September 2002

Was an interesting experience. We were far enough away that it was just a good shake, But the strangest thing was that the whole day before as we were climbing I had quakes on my mind. My whole body kept telling me to stay away from overhangs and edges. Not something Ive ever felt before, so when the quake hit I was lying there thinking "NO Fucken WAY!" In the end the rain drove us out of the hills and one of our crew fell off a waterfall which was the shittiest moment ive had in 22 years of Tahr hunting. Very lucky lad, as he went off the edge making a grab for a tree branch which slipped through his fingers, his leg hooked around a tree fern that had grown down the edge then back up to the light forming a U shape. Was a pity about the weather, as we saw 70 bulls 8 chamois and 4 reds. Will post something soon.
