Zastava rifles.....what's the story?

According to the blurb on Berretta Australia. they are going to be importing Zastava rifles soon - and presumably to NZ too.

Does anyone know any more than this, and just as important, what are these rifles like? I mean, a real 375 HH or 458 mag with a walnut stock for about a grand (less in Oz)...that's cheap as chips!

So, what's the story?

No real problem to bring one in from Australia.

The story is wait until they arrive before getting your hopes up. Being their first order, I think its been longer than expected to get them here.

Older Zastava imports were of very high quality. Remington took away the distribution from Chas. Daly. Immediately, the reduced quality and finish were noticeable.

I have an old Interarms import from the 70's. The quality and finish are exceptional.

However, the Remington 798's shoot quite well.

Well, they at least look good on the website [particularly now that an English version is up], and of great interest to us southpaws!

If you look at it , someone has put a lot of effort into that carving , and turned their rifle into a individual thing that suits them .

Obviously doesnt suit everyone , but each to their own .

gryphon1,

There is a heap of info on these and the Ruger No.1A in .303B over on AHN.

You are about three months behind with the news.

Some of the recent Zastava's apparently had stocks inclined to split - I saw one. Otherwise, it seemed accurate and looked OK.

I`m interested to see what these rifles are like coming in under the berretta banner. I discussed this topic with my local gunshop big bore rifle guy . I own a mini mauser Zastava, bought it some years ago. it was cheap, but I`d never sell it.

Gunshop guy and I discussed the likelyhood of a left handed Zastava being offered, I`m well aware they make them, but would berreta bring them in and rob sales from their Tikka lefty`s?

I can`t say. But I would be saying where the hell do I sign ??? to a .375 H&H Mauser in left hand..

Yes, Beretta Oz have confirmed they're bringing in LH versions. Including the big bores. Sounds like the first shipment is at long last on its way.
Doesn't look like the .458WM's have made it into this delivery though.

Some southpaw teasers:

We have a landing date!

Beretta Oz has posted over on AHN, that the Zastava shipment is due to hit Oz dirt on 18th August. They estimate about a week to clear Customs, then they'll start to go out to gunshops.

Edit: Update - from AHN 17/8/10, here's what will be available from the first shipment, after existing backorders are filled. Nice range of lefties! dancing

There you go, all the models and calibres listed below will be available and in stock (some in very limited numbers) after backorders have been sent out from this first shipment.

Cheers, Tony.

You'll have to ask Beretta NZ about that.
They are a subsidiary of Beretta Oz, so they can certainly get them, if they choose.

I saw one of these Zastava Remingtons in 458 win mag a few weeks ago.

Very rough action and piss poor open sights. Not for me thanks - although I am sure a good gunsmith could smooth them over - but I suspect the new FN Model70 Safaris will be a whole lot better buy.
