If you’ve hunted in a US state where a hunter education certificate is required, how did you meet this requirement? I’ve been checking the NY State Hunting and Trapping Regulations and it appears in order to get a license I need to show a hunter education certificate or a previous hunting or big game license. Has anyone used a non-US hunting license to meet this requirement? I’ll certainly be contacting the appropriate office when it comes time, but was wondering what other people’s experiences have been, especially if you’ve hunted in the US for the first time in the past few years. - stu

One Aussie hunter used the Rawson Vic ADA sambar education weekend certificate as evidence of hunter training and it was accepted.

Stu, If they say they will accept a previously issued hunting license then you will not have a problem. I have done this when I have hunted in Canada. I don't have a hunter's certificate because they weren't a requirement back when I started hunting. I do have my first ever issued hunting license. I also have an archery certification from the IBEP. I just take a old deer license with me when I go out of the US for any hunts just for that purpose. ~Ann

Cheers Nitro and Ann. I've had my NSW license since long before any education requirement existed as well. And I'm not much one for taking organised courses if I can get away without them. The Germans and the French have issued me temporary permits on the basis of my Aussie license, lets hope the yanks can do the same. A call to a nice lady at the NY DEC just produced a fax number and advice that I should send in a copy of my current license for assessment. She set me up with a customer number and I’ll be able to know the assessment outcome well before licenses actually go on sale. That’ll help with planning. - stu

Good luck, Stu, but I bet you'll find no worries. What are you planning to hunt? ~Ann

Ann, The plan is to backpack into the Adirondacks with a rifle over my shoulder and a deer tag in my pocket. I'm still trying to see if I can make it all work out. The tags and gun import permit are only a small piece of the puzzle. - stu

The gun import will be the tricky one for sure. Good luck, I bet your planned trip would be quite an adventure! ~Ann
