Myself & 2 mates are going on a hunt to kendall river station in mid June (far Nth Queensland)& I`m now busily booking flights 4wd etc. I searched through webjet & the cheapest flight to Cairns is with Virgin Blue ($418 return) But here`s the clincher, it takes 7:30" to get there. The flight leaves Newcastle at 12:20pm then to Melbourne, change planes, then to Brisbane, change planes, then finally to Cairns arriving at 7:50 pm. 7 days later it`s pretty much the same story for the return home. Has anyone got a better option ? My rifle case is a combination number lockable type, will this be OK ? Thanks in advance Cheers Morton If it sounds too good to be true, It usually is !

Bugger all that changing planes,I wouldn't be to keen on that.Rifle might end up in Perth. Can't drive to Sydney and catch a direct flight? How about Jetstar to Brissie, then Virgin to Cairns? Regards,Shaun. Kids in the back seat cause accidents, accidents in the back seat cause kids.

Morton I would drive to Sydney as easy suggested. Better take your gumboots as well! It will be very wet up there that early but especially this year! They have just had a cyclone go straight overhead after a heavy wet already. There will also be a lot of timber down from the blow. I would go later if possible. My 02. APB

Virgin blue tells us we are allowed 5 kgs of ammunition per person. I thought no problem, however my mate just weighed 150 rounds of his .270 ammunition & it weighs 4.5 kg. He was planning on taking 250 rounds. I am using a .300 win mag & was planning on taking 200 rounds for the 6 day hunt at Kendall river station up near Weipa. It appears I`ll be taking a lot less, or does anyone have any suggestions other than, make every shot count. Regards morton If it sounds too good to be true, It usually is !

Hi Morton I have been travelling to the general area you are speaking about since 1989. My comments regards the wet are relavant. all going well in a normal season [ie drier] and later the average you will need is about 10 rounds per day each unless you care to lay down suppressing fire on any swamp you encounter first! Regardless if you have never been before then you will enjoy the experience. APB

Flights are cheap because they are otherwise unattractive. Catch a flight that everyone else wants (i.e. the most direct) and it will likely be full, and the prices won't be discounted. Carriage of ammunition on aircraft is governed by international laws, and that's where the 5 kgs comes from. You will need to declare the rifle cases as dangerous goods (yes I know) so that they will be appropriately tagged, and so won't come off on the baggage carousel with all of the other luggage. The bags containing the ammo will also need to be marked as dangerous goods, 'cos they are. If it were me, I would be driving to Sydney, and then catching a direct flight, and not getting my knickers too twisted about the price differential. The more transits that you have, the more likely it will be that you luggage and you will end up in different places.
