Never shot a Paradise duck. Have seen photos and probably seen them when in NZ.

Post away, not just for big game hunting, I love the occasional duck shoot.

I get the feeling this forum is for "no game" Big Grin

Top-Predator, I'd love to see those pictures. How do you hunt them? Over water or in a field?

Paradise shelduck in NZ are pretty similar to the aussie woodduck to look at . They are a large duck - males are all black and females are a lustrous copper colour with a white neck and head . Very prety , but hated because a) they consume vast amounts of pasture and shit most of it out , fouling the rest of the grass b) they dabble around the edges of ponds and large puddles making big areas of mud , and c) they fly up and down river valleys squawking their heads off when you are trying to sneak up the valley afer a deer .

In many areas they are a major farm pest - flocks of over a thousand at a time eat a heap of grass . In some areas there is a special shooting season in March , in addition to the normal shooting season in May .

The area that Top Predator was shooting is one of the renown paradise duck haunts .

Post your photos mate , it is the Aus/NZ HUNTING Forum and duckhunting is still hunting .

Best place to set up decoys is in a paddock that has been cut for hay,as they like the young grass. We had 80 decoys out,the more the better and you can leave the dead birds out too as they work as decoys .Paradise ducks are not the smartest birds in the world. duck shoot 05

They don't look like wood duck, maybe more like a mountain duck.

50 of them makes a lot of duck. thumb

PS What is that strange thing you are holding? It only has one barrel? Cool

They looked like the western Australian woodduck that I saw in the 1970's in Wa , maybe they are a mountain duck in other parts . Pretty sure we share them anyway .

Fifty ducks for a shooting party is not unusual , although for one shooter it is a little over the limit.....

Is that North is or South Island?
i have not shot them for 2 years but the limit around Waimate then was 15 birds per person per day. Great decoy shooting and can limit out in an hour or so on a good paddock.

Nitro I think the answer is in Muzza's description Shelduck = Mountian duck = fun to shoot bad to eat. They sure do look like mounties.
The correct name would be Australian Shelduck if I remember correctly some site google turned up
