Rob,

I don't think you need anything special for Fallow..in .308win pretty much any of the standard Soft Point 150grain to 168grain bullets will do fine.

If you go below 150grain, you might end up with a quick opening bullet which will do a lot of carcass damage, but it will still kill them all the same..

In this day and age, its hard to go wrong with any of the mainstay bullets in the weights mentioned, it really depends what your particular rifle will shoot well...

I use Speer 150grain Hot Cor Soft Points as they group well in my rifle...

Regards,

Pete

150GRN in Hornady spire point, Remington Corloct, Nosler Accubond are great options for Fallow size game.
My favorite for that size game is the RWS Cone point.

Gidday Robz,

Don't forget the 150gr Nosler Balistic Tip. Its a classic fallow bullet at 308 or 30-06 velocities but any of the previously mentioned bullets will do as well.

I've been using a 150 gr Nosler Partition for years in the .30-06 and .308.

a friend just came back from a Fallow shoot, Shot a doe. He used Remington Core locks in his 6.5 X 55 Mauser and said the projectile just punched through the animal and that the wound channel was quite small. He thought that they were a bit too tough for Fallow.
I also notice that the Sierra Game king has not been mentioned. Is there a reason why I should avoid these?
thanks

Gidday Robz,

I would think that the corelock your mate used performed flawlessly. For deer sized critters you are going to want 2 holes. One for the blood to get out and one for the air to get in.

Honestly the bullet shouldn't act like a hand grenade unless it is being used on stuff you want to throw away. Expecting a deer to drop at the shot every time is unrealistic. This would happen about one third of the time in my experience. The rest of the time I expect them to run up to 100 metres.

The wound channel I expect is approx 1.5 calibres to be lethal. That is the hole size not the disrupted tissue which should be quite a bit larger.

Because a six inch exit wound is not present does not mean the bullet did not work and I think it performed betterbecause less lost meat which is my main concern.

I use 120gr corelocts mainly in my 260 for excellent results.

Happy Hunting

I have been using 125gn Nosler Ballistic Tips and they have been working well in a 308, longest shot has been about 150m which went right through 1 shoulder and out the other side of a doe. Can't fault them so far.

I've had a couple of recent opportunities to cull some fallow, not exactly sport but the meat tastes the same. I've shot about 25 deer, most with the 125gn Nosler BT from a 30-06. The shots have mostly been inside 200m, either neck or front shoulder. This combination has worked extremely well although if I was chasing a large trophy stag in less than ideal conditions I would probably go with a 150gn projectile.

a partition, on fallow!? nahhhh.

we were smoking goats over with 75gr Vmaxs out of my brothers 25-06.

just use a Vmax in your 308, they'll work!
and for the cost of 1 nosler partition you can put several V-maxs in it
