I am contemplating flying from LAX through Sydney to Auckland for a Red Stag hunt next April because of the miles and status I have with Delta. My concern surrounds flying into Sydney, changing airlines and on to Auckland. At the end of the hunt, it would be the same, in reverse. Does anyone have any experience with this and is it something that can be overcome without too much drama?

If you are "in transit" and you don't actually clear customs you do not enter Australia so are still in international territory. Therefore you firearms should be passed straight through. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

Exactly as 505G states. Once in NZ you will need a Visitors Firearms Licence. It will cost you $25.00 NZ. Go on line to NZ Police and follow the instructions on the firearms link. As you most likely do not have a firearms lic in OK you will need to have a copy of your hunter safety cert or a valid hunting lic. $25.00 has to be in NZ cash as the Police guys do not have access to EFTPOS or CC inside the customs clearance hall. happy hunting.

I'll actually be in NSW this Sept and thought I would stop in the Police dept at the airport to get a good understanding of the laws and how they interpret them. It sounds like I'll be okay. Thanks mates!

If in transit no problem, less stress just fly direct to New Zealand,NSW firearms laws are a mess right now.

Top Predator. Good point, but I think delta and the people they code share with don't fly LAX to Auckland. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

I know a few people who lodged their paperwork for a temporary permit in NSW (Sydney) in April this year and are still waiting. I and a few others applied at the start of June and I received my permit the day before I boarded the flight to Sydney, luckily the other people who applied at the same time had their paperwork turn up at Customs before they landed. At the rate they are processing them at it looks like the Aussies will win the competition because no one else will be able to take rifles to compete with. As long as you are only transiting through Sydney you will be fine, if you had to pick up your luggage in Sydney then you would need a commissioners permit and B709 plus export documentation for when you check in for your flight to Auckland.......Kiwi

Yes, getting a temp NSW permit can be problematic at the moment. Like others have said, in transit (same day) is OK... but be warned that if your SYD-AUK flight is delayed or cancelled it could be an issue. Sydney is however by FAR the best point of entry with firearms. I have a customs contact I can send you when the time comes - so you can advise them in advance of your travel plans. This contact is a firearms owner himself. A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

Matt I've been in and out of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth on and off for the last 12 years with firearms and while Brisbane used to be easy it isn't now, Sydney has been good but the latest application I now need certified copies of passport, firearms licence, club membership and drivers licence to make the 100 points of id, Canberra has been great, Melbourne has also been good. Perth well we got to the airport for departure and Customs told us we had to go to Customs house to get the export paperwork processed.......this was after dropping off the rental car. Had to go and get the car take everything to Customs House do the processing, back to Customs at the airport show the firearm serial number then we were escorted to check in. I simply don't understand why the Aussie government makes it so complicated.......Aussie is the worst country I have been into and out of with a firearm.........Kiwi
