Did a little hunting last weekend on a station in the Ninghan area . Quite a few goats around as the export market is strong at the moment and they're not being shot . We have an arrangement with the owners whereby we can shoot selectively as long as we pay market value for our trophies .
This one cost me 50 bucks . He's no world beater at 33 inches spread but is the biggest I've ever had a chance to hunt . Spotted him as we cruised the bush tracks that run between water points on the station .
Spent about 10 minutes in pursuit on foot as the wily old bugger rounded up his nannies and drove them away from danger .He knew I was following and kept placing himself amongst the nannies thus preventing me from taking a shot at him . Eventually I took a quartering shot from the rear which slowed him down enough to allow me to finish the job . Messier than I would have liked unfortunately .
Boy did he stink ! Took about 15 minutes to get the head off as we couldn't break his neck even after using the knife . Eventually decapitated him with another shot from the 7mm WSM . Back at the homestead we cut the skull cap out with a wood saw , dug out what we could with a knife and threw the horns and cap on an ants nest . 24 hours later and it was pretty well cleaned up .
No way the wife is going to let the head in the house but I guess I'll find a home for it in the shed .

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

Congrats on your first cheers

The head should come off real easy with just a knife. Cut away the skin at the back of the neck and feel for the Atlas joint location by rocking the goats head back and forth.Cut around the neck and then use the point of the knife to cut the tendons in the joint. You will need to twist the head to either side a little to get the knife in.Should be able to wack the head off in a couple of minutes. Do you know how to boil the horns out and remove the horns from the skull to get out all the gunge ?

T bolt ,
Have never boiled a head out or removed horns to get out gunge . Never shot anything previously that I wanted the head of ! You'd be surprised what a good job the ants and crows did though .
Thanks for the advice on head removal . Reckon I could have got it off with a little more patience . Was bloody hot though and he stunk to high heaven so used the 7mm axe . thumb

Hawaiian_Hunter ,
Goats look the same but the scenery is a little different from the country I was hunting . Our mountains generally aren't so high that you can't see over 'em . Wink
