Bushwalker crawls for days with broken ribs, ankle
By New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie

Posted Wed Apr 1, 2009 6:20pm AEDT

A bushwalker in New Zealand has spent two days crawling to safety after breaking his ribs, ankle and wrist in a fall.

While exploring remote alpine country in the south island, shopkeeper and possum hunter Matthew Briggs fell down a bluff.

Mr Briggs waited in his tent for a week for help to arrive.

When no-one came he realised there was only one way out.

"Crawled down to the hut, three kilometres... took me two days, pretty painful going as you can imagine with a broken ankle and wrist... fashioned a crutch with my tent poles," Mr Briggs said.

Two hunters staying in the hut then walked for 13 hours to raise the alarm.

Mr Briggs is recovering in hospital.
