I'll be making a trip home at Easter and will be trying to hit the sambar again. Late this year it may be either Sweden for driven moose or Poland for driven pigs.

Daniel - good luck with the bears. Is your 30-06 making the trip or have you got something else lined up?

I will be visting the Auckland region together with three friends of mine the first three weeks of August.

We will be staying with relatives of mine and plan to do some hunting at Taupa and at the South Island.

Suggestions from you people over there are very much welcome!

Heading to Charters Towers in April for Chital. Other than that just a heap of local deer hunting, both sambar and fallow. Along with the usual small game rabbits and foxes.

John, when are you planning your trips for? I am also thinking about similar options to try out the new .500 double. I spoke to James Brown about the tuskless/non-trophy elephant options and it sounds good, although his daily rate is a bit high, IMO.

I also spoke to Charlie Stanton and asked about "problem animals" and he is predicting that there could be quite a few this year. So I am keeping my options open at this stage.

I am also looking at possibly going with Muckadilla, late in the season, to sort out some water buffalo, too.

It just all depends upon money and time. In addition to the red deer hunt, I hope to be able to do one of the other 'dreams' and maybe defer the others to next year.

I am hoping to do a self-guided / arranged hunt in Arnhemland through a contact for water buffalo if it works out. Not sure which month as it is all up in the air, maybe before September - possibly June?

The beginning of September was when I was aiming for the tuskless cow elephant hunt. Maybe end of August. Otherwise it will be in 2007 at a similar time.

Tracks, who are you hunting with in the UK? Just booked 7 days on the south island for Thar, Chamois, Boar, Goat and Sheep. I also hope to take a turkey I understand they are not the challenge the Easter Turkey provide here. Just looking forward to a totally new experience.

Muzza, I've still got an old crook Bull Tahr tied up behind the hill here, should be easy enough for an old bugger like you.

well my sambar season has started already mainly because the freezer needs filling went out wednesday and put up 2 and 4 more after dark walking out after i shattered a free-wheeling hub and had to walk for 4 hours(all uphill) to get phone service.
Spent today setting up duck hides for opening saw 3-400 ducks mainly teal and blackies should be a quick hunt once they start flying.
the fallow should be in hard antler too so trying to arrange a hunt for them this weekend. and a trip to mallacoota to chase kingfish offshore the following week. plus the usual scouting for hog deer, reloading, spotlighting for pests and trying to knock over a few sambar to fill freezers and unfortunatly i have to fit some work in betwwen all that

Tim , I suspect the tahr may not be the only crook in your part of the country.....may not be this winter but you will find me one in the not-too-distant-future...

We have a large goat cull operation in a couple of weeks - taking Yank-Import Cutman along with us to introduce him to the joys of wholesale slaughter. Hope to post photos of the event.

Some good prospects for fallow in the Taranaki hinterland too .

tracks, good hunting. I hunted my stag in the northern highlands just a wee bit north of Inverness. The hill stag is a great trophy, not hugh like estate beast nor those of NZ but a great open hunt. I also got a kick out of hunting the water deer.

mark smith,
Sure did! On Friday I took a mate and his 14yo son to my favourite spot, for taking a meat animal. The bush is dry, but not unreasonably so. It's like hunting at an aerodrome though ... bzzzzz ... lots of flies about. I reckoned we'd have a sambar on the ground by 8AM Saturday morning, first shot was at 8:15am Big Grin The lad managed to take his first "stag" a spiker with a 270Win and was over the moon. He reckoned he wasn't too excited, but we couldn't shut him up for the 3 hours it took us to drag him out. Other than the spiker taken, we saw another 4 hinds and an 18"-20" stag in hard velvet.
Cheers...
