Way of topic again! Bakes will shoot me soon.

Drew has finished his work at the silos so we are now thinking about Year 12. Lucky me with ten kids this year.

Anyway, somewhere on the Net I saw a Royal Enfield built in India (500cc) and the guy said he could deliver one to Melbourne for $2000

Still interested in that,

But somewhere (and I cannot find the site) there is a place in India that builds replica 1000cc V twins of the Manx (I think?)

But I cannot find it.

If we carn't find it, I might get Drew to buy a Royal Enfiekd and build that as his Project,

I wonder what an Enfield would be like to ride?

Just like a ZZR1100, I guess.

Seriously, has anyone else seen the site for the V twin?

I PROMISE, no more talk about non gun stuff.

uuuummmmmmm

The Indian Enfields are named just that, "Enfields". The "Royal" didn't cross the continent even though the paraphenalia to make them did.

Yep, they Indian plant is the only source I know of for new spares for those who want to keep their old Enfields running.
And where else can you get a brand new classic motorcycle? I don't know if the Russians are still making the BMW copies that were sold here as the 'cossack', complete with sidecar.
I did hear a rumor that someone was making copies of the Vincent, perhaps that is the one you heard of GBB?

Cheers, Dave.

The Carbondale 1000cc Vee-twin Enfield version is produced by an Aussie guy , with most of the devlopment work done by a guy called Drysdale who has made a vee-eight racebike in Aussie . have the details in a Classic Bike mag somewhere.

You would be plain daft to consider importing a second hand Indian Enfield when you can buy one - or a new one - from a dealer in Aussie . Do a Google search on Indian Enfield dealers and you may well be surprised how close you are to one .

If you want a 1950's classic bike with 1950's foibles go for it . The new ones are modernized somewhat , some have electric start and five-speed boxes wiht left foot change but you will still be in for a challenging maintanance regime .

If you just want a nice bike to hack around on without the maintainance requirements get yourself a ten year old Jappa and just ride it .

Just my opinion of course - I have brit bikes and old jappas and the jap ones definately have more riding than fixing.....

PS if you are looking for a project bike stick to a Triumph , BSA or AMC ( AJS or Matchless ) because they have the greatest parts availability of any makes . Use the internet to locate parts , buy a parts manual and workshop manual , find someone nearby who has a similar bike and nknows how to fix it , and be prepared to spend a lot of money .

Suggestion No2 is buy a runner to begin with , then tidy it up as you ride it . that way you dont end up with bits of bike all over your shed , that is still in the same condition in ten years time ... BTDT too.

Hey co-incidence, I saw some of these in India in the last few weeks and thought what great looking bikes. A couple seen, Royal Enfield Thunderbolt and Enfield Bullet. Are they made in India or the UK?

IF you like arriving at your destination with oily shoes and trouser legs get an English MC, ANY English MC made before Mr Honda got going. Thats why we had saddle bags, to take our good strides and dancing shoes in.

We were looking at importing a new Enfield "in the crate" that were were quoted as costing us $2000 AUS delivered to Melbourne.

The drew "assembling" it to meet the yr 12 Systems (Auto) work requirements with a high compression piston and using it as a "sunday cruiser".

The above comments have (luckily) made me rethink that idea.

Drew already has a 2003 SL 250 and it is a great bike. we have always had Hondas.

By all means go ahead and do your planned import , but be aware that the "new" motorcycle you buy will be fairly demanding on maintainance , will not perform anywhere near what your current Honda will do , and you willprobably not be invited to ride with "mates" very often .

What you will have is a pleasant riding motorcycle with much of the charm of yesteryear , and as long as you avoid the motorways and stick to the quieter roads you will have lots of good old fashioned FUN.

Any motorcycle is a good motorcycle , some are just better than others.

I have seen the Enfields are good at dodging cows, camels, goats and donkeys so they must be manoeuvrable.

I don't think we will go this way now. I guess its a case of discussing heaps of ideas for a project then selecting the most appropriate.
