Reuters Genetic Engineered Gold Medals? 27/08/2004 NewstalkZB If you think Australia's emphasis on sports success is scary now, you haven't seen anything yet. Australia's Institute of Sport is working on plans to develop a genetic test which will identify children who will become the next generation of sports superstars. Scientists are taking DNA samples from elite athletes, to help the testing process. But Professor David Weisbrot from Australia's Law Reform Society questions where the technology will end. He says you have to question whether gene therapies will one day available which can turn someone who is not a top sports athlete into a gold medal winner. Some ethicists have given cautious approval to the program but Professor Weisbrot is worried it will mean some kids miss out: He says it could be that someone like Donald Bradman might never have been encouraged to play cricket because his genes were not right. Yeah next they'll be gene typing some of the posters on this board to create the ultimate drivel machine!!! | ||
