I've got tickets for the Rugby next year and I'm bringing the family over for a couple of weeks to stay with some friends near Timaru and maybe watch the quater finals in Christchurch.

I was wondering what the sport is like in that area in October. I quite fancy a day or two fishing or maybe hunt some pigs or red deer. This is my first trip to NZ and I want to make the most of it.

Thanks for any advice.

Deer will have, or will be close to dropping their antlers. Pigs are good to go.
maybe Chase a tahr or chamois.

Gidday Shanks,

You could always send him to the nearest H&F store to arrange something. They will be able to sort him out with something (If they are still in business that is) Mad

Maybe we should put him onto Headcase or some one who will be able to take him on the old farts Tahr hunt once it starts to get organised?? If he is old enough lol

Just a thought

Happy Hunting

Not sure if you guys are taking the piss or not. I'm 44 but pretty fit for my age - regular marathons etc.
Thanks for the help so far.

For those that don't know. H&F is NZ's biggest chain retailer of hunting and fishing gear, and they have just come out with a 2 page advert looking for landowners with hunting and fishing on their properties, to start a type of in house buy your gear and pay for your hunting spot access deal.
It go's without saying that many of us are against it, and pulling our spending support from their buisiness's.
We don't feel that the guys who take our money should be competeing with us for hunting spots to take yet more. We are going to try and hit this on the head.

Which is irrelevant to this thread, but it may explain the first part of Hamish's post.
The second part is a good idea. Every year the NZ fish and hunt forum holds a Tahr hunt for members over the age of 50, but they do bend the rules, in any case a guy such as Headcase, or one of the other members local to the area you are in may be hunting and be willing to take you for a hunt or two. Contact me closer too the time and I'll see if I can jack someone up.
Hamish may be free, and he's not to far north. Wink

Gidday Deerdogs,

Sorry mate, I'm definitely not taking the piss. As Shanks said this is about a local retailer doing the dirty on us. Sorry about the thread hijack.

The old farts tahr hunt is as Shanks says a hunt for those over 50 with very flexible rules. We would be delighted to have another hunter along I am sure. Headcase is the guy who arranges things usually and it is a very social event as well as a great hunting experience usually run in october.

If the dates (yet to be set for next year) are unsuitable I will do what I can to jack up a trip up the hill for you. If you run marathons etc you will walk the legs of me I'm sure. It's been 30 years since I have done anything like that.

I can't guarantee trophies but I will guarantee a good time. I don't hunt pigs with dogs but should be able to get you onto a deer, tahr and chamois if (as always) the weather does its part.

Happy Hunting

Hamish

Untill now, I thought you were young Hamish. The 30 year comment makes that incorrect.

Gidday Shanks,

Yeah I'm really young though I do qualify to go on the OFTH. Geeze I'm only 52 so I'm only half way there.

The only marathon I have done was the NEWZFORSEA (New Zealand Forces South East Asia) marathon back in the day. After that I thought bugger that I will stick to hunting.

I'm immensely grateful that I managed to keep my self for hunting as marathons are no fun at all.

Should have stuck to soldiering or farming but its too late to change that now.

Happy Hunting

Oct is a good time for Wallaby hunting near Timaru. Great fun & makes a nice skin. I even got the foot pad tanned as it looks so weird & confuses people - look s almost like a bird foot!

Tahr in Oct is a definite possibility - I got a few nannies last year. Lovely region to visit & good brown trout too!

Good luck .....but we will win the World Cup this time!

The bottom foot pad is so scaly & looks like a bird foot.

Naki Hunter beat me to it with a Wallaby shoot - always good fun and as challenging as you want to make it.

I know the wallaby thing is confusing for you Poms but you're getting really mixed up, its the AUSSIES and sheep, not Kiwis.

Cheers - Foster

Hi Guys

Looks like I'm headed to NZ 1-7 October. Thinking the fly fishing might be the best sport.

Thanks for the advice.
