I coming to NZ in March to hunt Red Stag and Tahr. Does New Zealand require anything special to bring firearms into the country from USA? My friend and the Outfitter say its a hassle bringing rifles into NZ for a short hunt. I heard from others traveling there that you fill out paperwork when you arrive along with 25 NZ Dollars and you are good to go. First time I heard anything like this. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

WLA

It can be even easier than that. The forms can be filled out online, in advance. Then just pay on arrival, at the airport police station. Check that your firearm models are on the 'approved list' first though. Not likely to be a problem, with any of the major makes.

For evidence of being a legitimate shooter in your home country, a hunting licence [or CCW permit] will help. Not absolutely essential for US shooters, though.

See also general information at http://www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/index.html

Download the NZ Firearms Code, and have a read, to familiarise yourself with the local rules.
One in particular to be aware of, is that it is illegal to leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle, in NZ.

Cheers,
Doug
