I recently had one of mine stolen(its a different story) but my insurance company revealed that firearms are NOT in fact sporting goods, nor are they "stored removables"(items that are normally in the house but can and do get transported from time to time). When I asked about what sort of insurance I need to cover firearms they couldn't tell me if any of their policies covered firearms, but they did tell me I should have public liability, in case I shoot someone when I'm out and about! ( BLOODY city people.)

Mine are fully insured by the RACV, under household insurance but I did had them valued for a little extra cost, they are stored in a safe within a strong room which would take a box of powergel to get into,,

Goz, All my firearms, scopes etc. are insured as specified items with NRMA under my home contents policy. This covers them for loss or damage at home or anywhere else in Oz or NZ. As far as I am aware, if you are a member of SSAA you are already covered for public liabilty up to $10m and they can also arrange cover for your firearms through one of the larger insurance companies. Cheers, Boof.....
