A guy working for us asked me to find out how much a hunting book he has is worth and where he could sell it.

Its a copy of John Taylor's "Pondoro- Last of the Ivory Hunters" signed "John Taylor Aug 56".

Publisher is Shakespeare Head Press. 1956.

It is in very good condition with one loose page. No writing in the book.

As I have heard before, the photos are incredibly clear compared to my Safari Press ed.

It was owned by a local identity who died a few years ago and left in (amongst with other stuff) to this guy.

Where do I go, what sites maybe, to get an idea of its value?

I believe it is one of the original first printing.

try the US E-Bay site and search through the hunting book section for similar type volumes .

Dont go to your local used book man, you will get shafted for sure.

Does he want to sell it ? If so then list it on Ebay with a reserve and see what happens .

I'd be interested in buying it but, of course depending upon price. If you find out the going price for such a book, and he doesn't want to be bothered with the Ebay option, let me know and I will see if I can meet his price.

Yeah, I would think there would be a good market among safari book collectors for that.

I'd get in line behind BwanaBob depending on the price as well.

I have a first printing from Simon and Schuster New York (1955). An earlier version? Not signed, though.

You might call Trophy Room books in Agoura, CA and ask them what they would sell it for. Here is what they have listed:

Taylor, J. PONDORO: LAST OF THE IVORY HUNTERS First British ed. vg, no jacket. $ 30.00

So, it sounds like your copy would be worth quite a bit more.

Now, if I could only find a first printing of "Scouting on Two Continents" by Frederick R. Burnham...

I was kind of thinking being a signed copy it could have been worth a bit more.

To think he was going to give it to me because he saw our book shelves over flowing with gun books.

I couldn't do that to a bloke, particularly as he is very fair with his hourly rate and I have noticed that he is very scrupulous with his hours charged.

Not like a few builders around here.

My guess would be that having the dust jacket would double the price to US$60-75 and the signing might bring it up to US$150-200? Just a guess, though.

Try Carol Barnes at Gunnerman Books.
email: gunnermanbks@att.net
She deals in hunting books and see if she
can help you out with a price. I've bought some
books from her and sold her quite a few and
she is a real stand up person.

I think that would depend on condition, but I would like to discuss if you have a copy you're willing to part with Smiler

Burnham has been my latest little memorabilia project.

I have two copies, one signed and one unsigned. Also, for reference, a signed copy of his second book, "Taking Chances".

The unsigned First can be had, but not cheaply or as a good deal. If still interested send me a PM.
