Pigs with a blade down under?

Just wondering.

Much of my family lives in Texas. When I go to visit I always take a day or two to go pig hunting. The guys I go with use hounds/dogs - plots, dingoes, walkers, a very few red bones and pit bull crosses for the hold dogs.

We let most of the dogs go coursing for a track, when they get after a hog we follow as close in the truck as we can. When the pig gets bayed up (guaranteed to be in thick cover with thorns coming out of everything) the hold dog gets released and we wade in after it.

The hold dogs generally go for the pigs left cheek and ear. The sport's job is to jump on Mr. Porky's back and stick a 7 1/2" blade into the chest right behind the fifth rib, and cut the great vessels over the heart. With a touch of skill and a modicum of luck, the swine expires in less than ten seconds.

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys ever do it that way, or a modified form of that way down there.

Thanks for the information dudes.

Much the same way as I do it with my mates. Although we drive along tracks until we find thick patches of scrub, then let the dogs out. Some of our dogs are "ute finders" - they can scent a pig while they are travelling on the back of the truck.

Another technique we use is to hunt the mobs of pigs out of the scrub with motorbikes, and push them towards the trucks.

Popular breeds among hunters here are mastiff / dane cross, various running dogs like staghounds, deerhond and wolfhound crosses, bull terrier X greyhound, the Bullarab, and numerous others.

Fast hairy dogs ROOL!

Whooooo Wheeeee!

That's what I'm talking about.

M-16 style bayonettes make great pig stickers at a modest cost. Easy to sharpen also.

Thanks for the pictures.

Amen!

No better way to hunt in the world.

Next year I will have a go at a mountain lion (cougar, panther) with a short spear behind the hounds. Will have a cross piece just below the blade. Not good to have a pissed off kitty cat slide down the spear on top of your head.

Great pictures!
