Gents, I was just wondering if there is much free public big game hunting in either Oz or New Zealand? By big game i mean stuff like Pigs, deer, buff ect? Regards, Pete PS I meant legal hunting too, not jumping over somebody's stock fence in the dead of night!

Yes there is. In Aust you can hunt (and that includes you) in the mountains of Victoria for sambar deer. Not tame stuff. Often thickly forested, slippery and wet. Can be snow. For those that don't know what they aredoin easy to get lost. The sambar deer is hard hunting and you will not see a lot of deer as they are not herd animals and are spread out. But if yoo have time you can spend months up there and become a mountain man. The land is National Parks and State Forests, some of which are open to public hunting subject to having proper firearms licences and hunting permits. Hunting permits are a formality except for ducks. Not sure about Vic Firearms laws. In South Aust a non-licenced person can shoot under the supervision of a licenced person. Drop me an email for more information. In NZ there is also public lands. Some like in Fjordland are balloted and there is even more rough country. Other mountain areas are open, I believe, but the huts may need to be booked.
