NZ gun law change...

Curious. Will the government actually "buy" your rifles and pistols which are now banned? How do they determine the value? What if you keep it in the closet?

Such a sad event. It must touch almost everyone in such a small country. Banning detachable magazine rifles and pistols is certainly a bold move. The 2nd Amendment is not in your constitution.

No mention of pistols here so far. And its only certain types of rifle - like "black" rifles and military semi autos. Sporting rifles remain unaffected.

A buy-back is planned , how and who establishes the value remains to be seen. As we have no gun register they dont know who has what ,so rely on peoples honesty in returning the firearms. Some classes of military semi auto/full auto are registered - those will be pursued with vigour , no doubt.
Your news media seems to be less concerned with the truth than ours though , should I be surprised?

That gun ban happened so quick. Too much power in the hands of just one person and she said this is just the beginning.

Mate - the people on the ground here are waiting for some truth as well. At present we have our Police telling us one thing today and another tomorrow .

Reality is we do not know what is planned, but we do not trust our politicians or our Police hierarchy.

As said, we have to wait to see the final outcome but at the moment it is being called a re-classification of the weapons in question not a ban. The focus is on MSSAs and other semi-automatic firearms that use clip/box magazines holding more than five rounds or for which large capacity magazines can be obtained or made, probably including the use of taped together one up one down magazines ah la Vietnam style era.
The Saiga shotgun for instance is configured as a military style shotgun with a larger capacity clip magazine.

These firearms will now fall under the same classification that military firearms including handguns have always had here in NZ requiring a much more rigidly control category licence (E endorsement) and storage facility plus membership of an accredited sport shooting club, the only place where these firearms can be legally used.

It has been on the radar for years now to reclassify these MSSAs away from the ordinary firearms license holder (A category) and hunter, and it would have eventually happened, just got moved along sooner by a deranged Aussie, who would have thought Confused

No you shouldn't be surprised. Anyone who is actually paying attention can plainly see journalism is dead in U.S. (for the most part)
There all concerned with pushing an agenda and getting the highest ratings possible.

What kinda of handguns can you own under a category A license?

We can not own any handguns under A cat, handguns are B cat and can only be used at a range.
