Jongmans shut up shop quite a few years ago unfortunately, they made some nice stuff.
I believe Jongman himself moved to Queensland but can't be certain. I have heard nothing about him since. Just guessing, he would be quite old now and may have retired too.

Where I used to live in NZ he was basically the local gunsmith and while he did very good work he was as slow as a wet week. 6 months to get a blueing job done, beautiful work but damn slow. He would have shifted to Aussie in the early 80,s and as KV says he must be getting on by now

I've been told he still has a fair stock of walnut blanks but haven't heard his name mentioned anywhere. I had a bit of tinkering done to the feeding of my .222 by one of his old staffers who was working for MAB in QLD but that was a few years ago now. I still see a few of his rifles come up for sale and for us lefties he was a god in the days when our only choice was the odd 700 Remington. If there are any Jongmans addicts out there let me know - i've a couple of left hand models i will sell to a good home.

I have a new Jongmans in .223 has a mab barrel though not the octaganel one, heavy action looks like it would handle a 416 rigby, barrel has been threaded and capped, shoots basically as good as any rifle I've had
He also made a nice single shot falling block action whish I believe was modelled on the De Haas-Miller design but not certain on that one. It was often fitted with an octagonal barrel too.
Unfortunately in those days I didnt have the coin to get one or would have in flash

I talked to a guy at the last Shot Show in Melb who was using large Jongman's actions to make up large cal sniper style rifles. He mentioned that the actions were being made under licence. He also said that they could have any action size made up in left or right hand. IIRC he was based out at Sunbury.

JFE, Any idea who made their barrels as they offered up to 600Nitro from memory of their advertisements.
Likewise ... did they make a single shot that was large enough to safely go 600Nitro Express? Is that action if it existed still available? Cheers... Con

They had some info on .416 barrels and Jongmans 93 [.50BMG size] actions on their website; now gone, but does still come up in the Google cache.
The info on the barrels says [direct copy from the page, their spelling]:
"We have sourced and Australian manufacturer of high quality barrels for the big guns! Ordance Precision Industries provide SAMMI spec or custom spec barrles to the ballistic testing and defence industry. They do not usually make barrels fo public sales, we now have access to thier barrels".
Cheers, Doug

Jongmans made their own barrels from 17 up to 12 ga(727), moved to Oz in 1987 and closed up shop in 1993. The falling block single shot action was the DeHaas Miller action.

I dont know what Jongmans originally used to make, but the chap I spoke to at the Shot Show was making up actions to suit 50 BMG.

Thanks Joe, From memory they made big barrels and had a Farquarson style single shot action (?) as well as a bolt actioned single shot. A single shot action with the potential to take big rimmed cases would go down a treat I reckon. The No1 has had no opposition for donkeys years and is maxed out at 577NE. Cheers... Con

Con, John Jongmans made the Farquharson barreled actions for John Saunders/Wal Winfer. Fair bit of work required to make them really nice, but it is worth it. Cheers, Chris

I was under the impression from a couple of articles I read about Jongmans rifles, when they were in New Zealand that he used Shilen barrels. I might have to dig those articles out and re read them. I have one in 270.....would love to get hold of one in 222.

For scope bases etc this place would be worth a try, email them if not listed as they may have an old stock or even a pattern to make you one up or advice what would fit: http://www.lynxoptics.com.au/lynxscopemounts.html
Its all coming back to me now, I also seem to recall Shilen barrels being mentioned.

I very much doubt you will get a 1 piece base unless by coincidence the spacing is the same as something else they were only ever made with the rings straight onto the top of the action. He made his own rings. The hole spacing for each ring is standard about .82" and any 2 piece bases that fit a DGA Shilen or other similar flat top action will work. If yours has a round top, you will probably need to get something made or modified to suit your action.
