Whats it about?

------------------------------
A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

bit boring but its the history of the sub antartic island through its whaling days til now. Geology, geography of the island. etc. Must have been a tough breed, those who worked there as whalers. finished in the late 60's.

I just find it fascinating. Whaling used to be an honourable profession.

Theres a herd of reindeer on the island imported by the Swedes way back in 1904 (approx) that is not meant to be hunted but apparently a few are shot by passing yachties that are emense.

very lovely scenery ...

Thanks nitro, I'll check on it Monday.

Constaintino Davidoff's men on their salvage missions (the ones that helped spark the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War) shot some of the reindeer as well, though they were a protected species.

Apparently most yachtsmen who visit knock off a couple. It would be great to visit Grytvitken (sic) whaling station.

A well known ex pat Aus from Tasmania who married a Frenchman who lives on an island near the Falklands might know a fair bit about the reindeer herd and shooting the odd one or three.

And I still haven't been able to get a good (reasonably priced) copy of this book yet.
