it looks like I'll be out hunting in NW NSW this April again, on the Cuttaburra river. I hunted this area a few years ago and it was great, I think I put something down about it in a previous post. We got to chatting to some folks at the Hungerford pub who said there are a lot of foats in the area, but we were not able to look into it any further. Does anyone here live or shoot in the Bourke area? Can you offer any advice on finding some goat shooting up there?

I shoot in the Tilpa/Whitecliffs region & I know the cockies out there don`t want you shooting their goats. These days most cockies sell them for export, so they make a few extra bucks out of what was not that long ago considered a real pest. In some cases whole paddocks are dedicated to the feral goats (10,000 acres +) in order to allow them to breed without fear of predation, 2 or 4 legged. I suppose if you were after a trophy buck your particular property owner may make a one off exception. But then if you asked if he minded you hunting one of his sheep or cattle it would be pretty much the same thing. Feral goats were fetching up around the $30 per head 12 mths ago & when we consider the big properties had goat populations in the thousands we can also see it wasn`t going to be long before commerce overtook mans need to hunt. Having said all that I`m sure you may find some feral goats still wandering wild in a paddock out there in the Bourke area as it is just so bloody big an area. But then, it`s all about what the cocky wants you to do. Good luck If it sounds too good to be true, It usually is !

Express When I came back along the Darling in 2002 from a pig hunt there were hundreds of the buggers viewable from the road. Didn't stop though and see what they looked like through a scope but no decent horns sighted either. I did believe they were treated as stock unfortunately. Damned shame when you here about great sets of horns been wasted in sale yards. A "foat" is an amphibious goat.
