A night spent shooting foxes in an old Landcruiser with a 350 Chev rates well up there with medals.

We got a few foxes and rabbits.

But, the noise of that engine and and the vibration is amazing. After four hours, it becomes fairly bad.

And every time you get a set of eyes in the light, the smart fella decides another 300 hundred yards out PLUS makes sense. It has to go.

We need a quiet tray back diesal.

My 97 Landcruiser with the 4.2 diesal is pure magic compared to Drew's 350.

I know diesals are noisy for their performance. Just comparing noise wise.

We have a 8 month old WRX. Wife's car. No bad habits that I have found yet. Little obtrusive sound.

And it blows my mind away with how hard it will go. The old GTHO would be put to shame- or at least the one my brother had.

There would be few V8s that could get near it- flatten the foot at 160 and suddenly you are way out there at 220 plus- its scarey at times.

But son just wanted a big V8.

Can you gents get the 4.3 liter Chev engines there? It is like a 350 with 2 cylinders lopped off. uses the exact same tranny and all of the same accesories. derf

Navara diesels seem to be a lot quieter than Rodeos. Toyotas fall b/w the two. The Triton diesels aren't too clattery either.

I don't know that we do get the 4.3 L chev. Just seem to see the 350 advertised in many conversions.

The only new "Chev" engines we see here now are the 5.3 & 5.7 litre all alloy V8 petrol engines and some 6 or 7 litre turbo diesel behemoth shoe-horned into the Chevy Suburbans.

I think my son thinks that his "loud" V8 Landcruiser will be a chick magnet for all the good looking, naughty girls in his class.

I know this 350 chev is far from a new engine as it has a Holley 600 on it instead of EFI Etc. But many old converted cruisers seem to be advertised with them. The vechiles are so heavy (3,000 kg) that they need that many cubic inches to get them up and going.

And the negative side is that this means his "pride and joy" is very thirsty.

Probabaly worse than me in that regard.

Our gas is currently $1.05 per liter, diesel s $1.07(Can), you can do the math, it just makes my head hurt to think about the prices!
The 4.3 liter Chev engine has been around since the late 70,s up here and it is a direct replacement for the 5.1 or the 5.7. Interestingly enough it will also take the place of any of the big block gas hogs as well. I have an 89 GMC Jimmey with the 4.3 in 4x4 and it rides quite nicely and gets pretty fair gas milage. derf

Son even considered replacing that 350 Chev with a smaller displacement engine. That would cost...!

Better off to try and sell it for $8,000 and buy a Rodeo or Hilux. I wanted son to look more seriously at the Hilux from the beginning.

But, our first car (well, for most of us) teaches us a heap about the value of the dollar but also how to fix up things that go wrong.

His Landcruiser certainly goes well. Is damn quick. But it will cost a lot to run, particularly as he is still finishing Secondary School (Year 12) with no job so we will be paying. He bought it from the money he got working at our local barley silos.

So I guess parents (me particularly) learn about giving in to children's wishes.

Hard when they are over 18 and at the same age, you were independant and at uni and doing many things that you don't really want your son to be doing at the same age.

But I guess we all know about that. Do as I say....... I never inhaled...... I never looked at another girl until your Mum came along.... I never ......I never........

GBB,
Sounds like it's really the 'wank factor' exhaust that's the problem here. It's not hard to set up a quiet single pipe system on a 350 - and still have low restriction. I've had one for 20 years! Standard 'ram's horn' exhaust manifolds, ~2" header pipes to a Y-piece, then 2.5" for the rest, via a single 'turbo' design muffler.

The advantage of the Chev over the Tojo 2F petrol donk is it's lighter [about 20kg, with the alloy Chev bellhousing] and always got about 18-20mpg on petrol, against 12-14 tops for the 2F. And of course, the extra grunt [though the Chev needs to be built up for bottom-end torque, not top-end power, to work best in a Cruiser].

That's with a Rochester Q-Jet carb - Holleys need to be set up by someone knowledgeable. Or these days, a MoTec injection setup would be a better way to go. With carbs other than Rochester [Holley, Carter], surging on steep slopes is a severe problem, due to the float chamber layout. Of course, LPG solves that problem, too.

Cheers,
Doug

We have sold it for just a hundred dollars less than we paid.

I have been surprised at the number of people who think the 350 Chev is the bees knees.
