Was wondering if you can use it for chamois (gams) and Tahr or this is not feasible (legal requirment or use) ? im thinking about coming and have nice hunting time in the mountain without helicopter time ...

Why wouldn't it be legal. I get 2900 fps from a 129 gr hornady spirepoint from mine.

We don't have any legal or minimum requirements for cartridge use on game here in NZ. The only proviso is that the firearm is legal for importing into the country or owning on a normal firearm licence class i.e. not a pistol, fully auto rifle or military style firearm. You can shoot game with whatever cartridge takes your fancy, 22RF to 50calBrowning although 22RF is not permitted on Dept of Conservation reserves/national parks as they could be used for poaching native birds (pigeon) but in practice they are used in these areas to take rabbits and hare that are regarded as pests. The 6.5x55 is becoming a more common cartridge here in NZ and ammo is freely available. Probably the most common new cartridge here now is the 7mm-08. Ideal for everything we have to shoot here making use of the ballistically efficient 7mm bullets.

You certainly can use the 6.5x55 cartridge here. If you are specifically after alpine animals you would be well advised to practice shooting your rifle to ranges in excess of 300 metres at steep angles - up and down. Be very familiar with your bullets behaviour at those long ranges and you will have more chance of success in our mountains. Good luck ________________________ Old enough to know better

Yeah, its a fine choice. A 100-125gr projectile for Chamois, and a 140 for Tahr would be sweet.

Gidday medved, The 6.5x55 is one of the ideal cartridges for NZ. It is one of my all time favorites, especially if you reload. A 129 to 140 gr bullet driven hard will do the job nicely for the game you describe. You should have a ball here, I sure do though expect to have a few shakes (earthquakes) round Christchurch. Peter will ensure you have a good time. Happy Hunting Hamish

The 22 hornet is no longer allowed on DOC land. The minimum caliber is now 222 Remington. Pity, my hand loaded hornet was dynamite on goats. I liked it cause it was light and easy to carry and I could really shoot with it. Regards 303Guy
