A question for Australian board members.... If I were to consider a 3-4 year job assignment in Australia, would I be able to own and use (non semi-auto)long guns to hunt and target shoot?

Are there any long distance competitive shooting ranges (600-1000 yd)in the Brisbane area?

Thanks for your help.....

Yes you can, just have to get a licence like the rest of us, yes to long range shooting, ranges to 1200yds.Benchrest out to 1000yd, Palma type shooting from 300, Metallic Silhouette rifle & pistol in fact most any sort of shooting can be done in the Brisbane area.

Does depend on your visa mate ... when you know what Visa you will be here under, give the QLD weapons people a call and see if they will give you a licence.

When I was here a few years back in NSW. I talked to someone over the phone and told them I was in NSW for a year and had a working Visa. They said i was a tourist and could not get permits.

I looked into some other things that required "proof of residence and found if I had a NSW drivers licence and a bill sent to my name at an address I was then a redident.

So I called the gun folks back and said I want to apply for a gun permit. My name is.... My NSW drivers licence is .... and my address is ...

They sent me out the forms and I went and wrote a test at a local sporting good store.

Then I realized it was going to cost heaps and take a very long time before I could get all the "ducks in a row" and then I would not have much time to use a gun here. So I packed it in.

This time in S.A. I have a "basic Hunting Permit - Class 1" and I am practicing with a 50 lb. recurve I bought. I will be hunting rabbits and fox soon.

You MIGHT be able to do it in QLD because their permit system is somewhat 'loose' - other states it wont happen because the permit is only for a set period and you need a flight out to get it!! QLD may ask you for a flight out too though ... which will blow that idea.. If you do get it (visitors permit and import permit) you may be able to surrender the guns to a gunshop when the permit expires and then get them back when you get your residency and full licence.

I dont have a QLD application at the moment but I would reckon you should email the QLD Police Firearm Permits office and get them to send it to you and the conditions to get the permit. Reckon you will need to get a letter from a landowner (in QLD) OR maybe a membership from a recognised hunting club (AHNi??) . AHNi isnt actually recognised in QLD yet but it should be in a few weeks apparently.

Anyhow - best of luck!!

Matt

Just a guess on my part, but I'm betting that before this is all over you will figure out why we are celebrating today and what freedom really means.

Phooey.... You can bring guns to my country but it is near impossible for me to bring guns to your country. That is all about freedom for US citizens alone and to hell with the rest of the world!! AND that is the attitude of many Americans I meet, they care not what happens outside their own country.

BESIDES - we have 'freedoms' here in the South Pacific that many US citizens will never know...

Can't think of any off the top my head though...NZ is a different story. Quite civilised over here. Bring all your guns mate. Shoot up a storm wherever and whenever you like.

In Aus all I can think of is all the things Big brother wont let you do. Cant even go duck hunting for Christs sake. The only thing perfectly acceptable that everyone can indulge in, is some good old fashioned curruption.

Hey Matt,

not to piss in your porridge bowl or anything, but I went into my gun room and counted thirteen handguns, nine shotguns, and over thirty center fire rifles. How many of any you got in your home? About ninety-percent of them are not on any firearms registry with serial numbers and my name. Tell me more about those "South Pacific Freedoms" you are touting, that we will never know. Our Supreme Court just ruled (again) that all American Citizens have the right to keep (how's that mate?) and bear arms. I bought two more revolvers last week, and didn't even have to get a permit. The friggin' US Govt doesn't even know I have them!! I just drove from Idaho to the Oregon Coast with one in my Jag convertible and crossed state lines without having to ask permission. I had a loaded 45acp in my hotel room, and driving around in my car. Imagine me doing that in your town? Imagine YOU doing that in your town?

I was talking about freedoms in a general sense - not neccesarily about firearms and hunting.

If you talk about hunting though - most places in Australia and New Zealand there are no restrictions on game/feral hunting. My deer season at home runs unrestricted for nine months of the year and I live in one of the few places where there is a season at all. Admittedly tight game seasons in the US exist for many different reasons (many valid, some not) but I cant imagine living in a place where I could only deer hunt for a month or so a year.

As above I was refering to freedoms in general - but now you mention it I do have more than thirty rifles, handguns and shotguns and can own as many as I like.

And even better, we can use them A LOT!

And not at paper targets either.

You have HOW MANY handguns in your house that are not registered with any government entity?
I heard a different story from the guide services that were here at SCI Reno in January.
I also own two AR-15s and a couple of CETME semi-autos in 7.62x51.

What were all those postings earlier about getting permits and such?

regards,

Rich
The government don't have a clue how many firearms or what type I own. And never will.

Good for you.

Hope you actually get to use them once a year too.

What Matt objected to was the self righteous post about how "lacking in freedom" Australia is because Americans may have to get a permit to bring a firearm here.

For one, you are foreigners here ...

And as Matt wrote, it is almost impossible for us, ie Australians or any other non-US citizens, to bring a firearm to the USA.

So comments criticising Australia for the fact a Yank has to get a permit to bring a firearm here, fall a bit flat.

I have tried to hunt with Matt on two occasions now and got shot down both times. No fault of Matt or the Aussies. My local olice chief has a policy that none of his officers can sign the forms. Some bs about exceedind authority. So I cant even apply for the temporary permit. My only other option is to jump through the hoops to get a concealed carry lic. Then after that it should not be an issue to get the sherrif to sign but only after I am in posession of a CCW kit. The other thing that has come to light in researching all this is for some reason I am on homeland security list for od knows what. I am sure I will have to redress that issue first after I finally find out what it is. Everytime I come through customs I catch crap and usually get searched. I get put on delay each and every time I buy a firearm. Last I can never check in to the airport online and have to wait until I get there. We are looking at no arrests, wants, or warrants. I am a medical professional and I get a full background check run on me every year. My debts are all paid off and my credit impeccable. So wtf? Anway I got on my soapbox to vent and digressed a bit. The point was I am about as squeeky clean as you can get and still catching grief. All of it from this side of the pond.
