| Suzuki sierra. Take the back seats out and you have miles of room for your gear. Lightweight ,doesn't get bogged easily and verry miserly on fuel. I use mine for work and play. rob |

| Landrover defender, some of the earlier models should be around your budget, will use less fuel than all you mentioned, will go anywhere, hard to break( I havent broke mine yet!), hard to bog, lighter than those you mentioned ( I think), in the 5 door wagon, heaps of room for aformentioned magnets and gear, parts very available ( both genuine and aftermarket). Seriously though, mines been a real good bus for me and I havent been terrible kind to it.All I've made sure of is that if something goes wrong, I fix it and I service it regularly. Another bonus is that you have to try real hard to get booked in one!( although they are quite comfortable cruising at 110 k's) Thats my thoughts. |

| Pete This will be the cheap 4X4 I have a VT Holden for a family car and all I need is either a bench seat or a dicky seat in the back for one of the monsters. I'm not bothered with no room for friends as I have a HZ Ute now with only 2 seats in it, I just need one more for number 2 son. And besides I don't have any friends We use landrovers at the dog school and I'm not to impressed with the ergo...erga.....its a bit squeezy inside I'm off to Darwin in a couple of weeks and I'm going to do a lap of the car yards. Katherine has bugger all. |

| Nitro,
What size/type engine did that have? The old petrol Range Rovers had a similar reputation, but many are getting another lease of life with LPG conversions...

| Bakes,
If you have family or friends to carry about you will be sorry in your heart if you ever buy a SWB/ 2door 4x4 of any sort. I had a SWB 2.8 TD Isuzu Trooper for 8 years and it was excellent except it was a pain in the butt for people to get in and out of.
last year I went up to a 3.1 TD LWB Trooper and it is far more convientent.
Have you thought of buying two vehicles? A tidy non 4x4 Estate car for family stuff and an older cheap 4x4 for hunting? A desiel 406 Estate will get easily 35miles to the gallon probably nearer 40 and will be far more roomy that a little SJ. Then get a cheap and cheerful SJ or S111 LandRover for hunting; hell those Nivas are really good off road too...they have 12" ground clearance as standard.
Regards,
Pete |

I really liked those old Nissan Patrols as they were solid as tanks but I suspect they were also thirsty!
I used to have a Nissan Patrol that did less than 4 kms to the litre. Its now rusting on the farm. |

Ha ha the conversion would be worth more than the Nissan. I think it was a 4.5 litre but gutless as hell. I'm not talking speed, I talking getting up a hill. |

| Bakes,
I know what you mean about the Defenders; everything is hunched up towards the drivers door...
Having only two seats now is not the same as having to tilt a front seat forward to let the monster in and out of the back; trust me on that, it *really* gets on your nerves after a while. Of course with some of the 3 door 4x4's, thats not an issue as the person in the rear can use the back door...

I am not sure what you guys consider good fuel consumption over there, but my Trooper does an honest 30mpg unless I am tearing around in 4wd...Dicoveries seem to be about the best with some folks getting 35mpg, but even I admit that the chances of buying a "dog" put me off those. If you get a fairly modern 4x4 they can be re chipped to give better fuel consumption, plus there are after market goodies for sale in 4x4 magazines which are supposed to be able to improve things as well.
regards,
Pete |

| "Once again, the Yanks manage to mispercieve the situation" There are no Rubicon Trails or frame twisting obstacles in the Northern Territory. There enemy up there is heat, distance and the price of fuel. Here is a picture I took from the top of Ayers rock in '88,looking east towards The Olgers. There is a whole lot of nothing out there.A 350 cubic inch Chev sucking fuel at 6/MPG which sits in a three ton hunk of tin painted black ain't much good to you out there. |
