Well I came to the South Island of New Zealand over a week ago.
My wife and my business partner and his wife were also on the trip.
We came to hunt Tahr with Adrian an Brent Moody
Of Mountain hunters of New Zealand.
We never expected to go and hunt on the arrival date but we went out about 3 pm and sighted the guns in and away we went.
We where hunting a private ranch with plenty of land.
We where seeing Tahr from our lodge just on the mountain behind us.
It did not take but an hour the most for us to locate some shooter bulls.
Well up the mountain we went, we had a good start had a 4 wheeler to take us up part way up.
Within in 45 minutes my partner was with in 200 yards of 2 rutting bulls chasing the nanny's around
Finally the big bull was clear and one shot from the Blaser R-93 300 wby
The bull was down. They caped the bull and we where on our way back to the lodge just at dark.
The next morning was foggy but we seen plenty of bulls
I had 4 different bulls within 200 yards for over an hour but passed. They where just to easy.
That afternoon we went back to where my partner shot his and we seen a nice old bull headed allmost to the exact area my friend harvested his.
I climbed the mountain and the bull came with in 160 yards.
I set up on him and my gun would not fire.
I tried 2 more times no boom.
The bull never knew I was there and it went over a knoll.
I grabbed my partners gun an headed over the knoll.
The bull was heading up but stop on a outcrop of rocks.
I set up quickly and pulled the trigger.
He hit the dirt never moved. I believe he was 145 yards.
It was a 10 year old bull.
My Blaser R-8 300 would not fire needs to go back to Blaser.
Something screwy with the bolt or firing system.
I was very happy with the hunt.
Seen well over 100 tahr in the 1 1/2 days of hunting.
Very easy hunt for an old guy like me. No helicopter.
I went out the next morning my buddy harvested a nice old Fallow deer again one shot from the 300 wby.
We took that back to the ranch prepared the meat to hang.
Grabbed a coffee and off we went.
I was after an old nanny for a life size
We where gone about 1 hour and I harvest an old gal at about 280 yards again with the 300 wby
Now our hunt was over. Less than 2 days and 4 great animals.
We have been in Christchurch not much to do, raining every day so just taxi rides and eating out.
I could have bought a car for what we spent on cab rides.
New Zealand is not cheap most of the meals out for 4 was over $150 NZ
One bottle of beer here at the hotel was $9.00 NZ
Pretty strong
The cab rides from town where $30 one way 2 to 3 times round trip a day.
Well doing this on my phone may have some mistakes
Will correct later
Leaving for home tomorrow.
Just love it here thanks to all the people we met and helped us.

Good report Larry and glad you got some animals and saw plenty of others, can’t wait to see the photos but real shame your rifle let you down. I wouldn't want this to happen where I'm heading tomorrow.
My nephew and I are driving down to South Westland tomorrow and meeting up with his friend from Canterbury who also has a work colleague arriving out from Alaska today, and then weather permitting, we will be choppered up into the Alps near the main divide for 10 days on tahr, chamois and perhaps red deer. It is a pure tenting hunt, no huts or amenities other than what we can pack into the machine and it is going to be very, very, cold.
Will be out of touch with civilisation for all that time so will have to post a report on return home.

Thanks for posting your report. I'm especially interested in anything New Zealand because I'm booked for a hunt there next year. I'll be 68 then, so it's good to see that old guys can stalk Tahr. tu2

Your hunt sounded great. I like the pic of your buddy and his Tahr. Hope you can post more pics soon.
