Wow! I thought Oz had 9 of the top 10. I suppose it all depends on who's list you read. I see that the mamba is below the Indian cobra! Surprised. Also no listing of the Indian Krait, which has both neuro and heamo toxins. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Gee, looks like there's a whole bunch of snakes in oz. That don't include the two legged human kind either! Thanks for posting Tony. Naki, stay well mate! George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" LM: NRA, DAV, George L. Dwight

I seen a Brown snake about 4 1/2 foot long, on my Monday arvo walk. Looked like it had just returned from getting a drink, from a suburban back yard, adjacent to the bush reserve where I wander. I was more concerned about the heat, as it was 39*C / 100+ *F, than I was the snake........they don't eat much. Doh! Homer Lick the Lolly Pop of Mediocrity Just Once and You Will Suck For Life!

Homer what part of town was that in? We used to walk this little track in Harrison behind the schools. Stinking snaky place!

We have a fair bit of swamp land around base and with the wet season here I want to try something I've wanted to do for years. I want to get under water (with snorkle, goggles) and see if some of our dogs can find me with just the scent coming from my breath. May have to rethink that plan however because as I was driving past the area I was going to do it in a bloody Brown snake come out of the water ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. at our place we've identified (?), Red Belly Black snake, Eastern brown, Coastal Taipan and Black snake (speckle bellied Black snake). The wife stood on/kicked a 5" Eastern Brown at the foot of the stairs awhile ago. Didn't get bitten thankfully.

BWW, this was at the back (western side) of Chifley, where it backs onto the Tuggeranong express way. There is a bush reserve there, with a fire trail I follow, on my way up to the top of Mt Taylor. Not the first one I've seen there and won't be the last.... Regards Homer Lick the Lolly Pop of Mediocrity Just Once and You Will Suck For Life!

My brother came too close to stepping on No2 last Sunday whilst heading for a tree to answer natures call. Was hunting one of my Boar hunting spots and that encounter shook him up a tad.

What surprises me is even when it is fairly, and warms up just enough you might see one of the bastards. We hunted in Victoria for sambar quite a bit (I never got one, but saw a few), snakes even on warmer winter days.

Pete from Coffs harbour sent me a photo of a 12 ft python on his door step with a big lump in its stomach. Real cool picture. I hope he posts it here. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

We saw a pale, sandy-coloured snake crossing the road near Daly Waters NT last year but only on reaching the Darwin museum did I realise what it must have been. However, seeing your list I am now wondering whether it was #1 or #3. I am interested to know that the copperheads we had in Western Victoria made the list yet our common-or-garden tiger snakes (which have a bit of attitude) don't seem to cut the mustard.

what the original list also fails to mention is that with the drought conditions in queensland, is that a lot of the snakes have been cross breeding and now you get some of the pythons that can give you a bite that needs treatment with anti-venom. and don.t forget some of the spiders like the northern funnel webs that breed with the wolf's and huntsman and can be damned aggressive if the first whack doesn't get them. had one rear up and chase me after using a broom to shoo it thinking it was a normal huntsman. and be careful with some of the snakes as even though it is only the Canadian plains snake that is meant to be able to survive freezing, well I have seen a bandi bandi that was put in the deep freezer to be a sample for CSIRO and three days later when the guy shows up and it's taken out of the frrezer and he takes the lid off the bottle it was in and the damn thing started to unwind itself out of the bottle. the centrepedes can also give you a very nasty and painful bite. got bit on the end of the finger one morning and in about 20 minutes that hand was twice the size and you could trace the vein that went black with the poison from the hand up to the armpit. whole hand was swollen for 5 days and couldn't use it to do or hold anything and was extremely painful all that time, with nausea and heart racing and difficulty breathing. if I was alone or on foot and a long way from help then it would have been very dicey.

Years ago the Mongoose was introduced to Okinawa Japan to help control their abundant Habu snakes. Has anything like that been done in Australia.

Not meaning to be rude ... For a first post I was hoping to read something more believable than pythons cross breeding with venomous snakes!

Yes the cane toad! Mongoose was also tried in the Caribbean to control rats etc and they became a big pest.

Yes, Naki, the cane-toad experiment did not 'end' well. In any case, Australian native snakes, for all their dangers, are no longer seen as pests but as essential elements in the balance of nature. Without them we might have many more mouse plagues etc.

George you are right on the money mate. An FAQ published on Queensland's Environment and Resource Management website concurs: Is it true that dangerous snakes such as taipans etc. are interbreeding with pythons, and producing ‘venomous pythons’? Does the taipan cross with the king brown to produce a fierce snake? No. It is impossible for venomous and non-venomous species of snake to interbreed. Even closely related species are extremely unlikely to interbreed in the wild. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/sna...hon-interbreed.shtml Posts: 87 | Location: Victoria Australia | Registered: 07 September 2002

In captivity you can cross the different carpet python sub species and they will cross with the diamond python (which is a carpet python sub species). Also you can cross the children pythons sub species together. But there is no way a venomous snake will cross with a python. A male python has two hemipenes which corresponds to the females sexual organ, they go together like a lock and key. A brown or black snakes hemipenes wont "fit" a python. At least that's how it was explained to me. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" When I was young and stupid(er) I would grab 7, 14 and 22 by their tails and swing them around to keep the sharp end away. Eventually I got hit by 22, and it wasn't much fun. These days I leave them in peace.

They'll catch you eventually. As I say about blokes who reckon their dogs are good snake killers. It's not just the venom ranking that needs consideration. There are many other factors including size and temperament. The WA tigers that my brothers and I played around with as kids are a much safer fish than a mamba is. A mamba would be more likely to succeed in killing a person than a tiger, but isn't ranked as highly, which is really misleading.

why would drought conditions alter a snakes decision on who it was going to screw?
| |||

About our snakes. Because our snakes have evolved in an environment where there was no thick skinned game, their fangs are short. So in order to be safe all you need to do is wear jeans. Most of the time when you see a snake they're heading away from you as quickly as possible. Not my favourite creature, but they do a lot more good than harm. JC
