SmilerWon't be going until late February, but would appreciate any suggestions on best or cheapest way to get to Christchurch. Last time I flew out of LAX at midnight into Sydney, changed planes and on to Christchurch. LAX to Sydney was truly crowded, and this was in early May. Kind of a tough flight, and this time I'm taking my wife.

Do any of you seasoned hunters have thoughts on this? Thanks!! Smiler

I will (sadly) be leaving NZ to head back to the states shortly. My flights were LAX to Auckland to the Dunedin. I would imagine you could easily get a flight from LAX to CHCH either through Auckland or straight to.

Coming home 10 days ago Aukland- LAX and on, the plane was nowhere near full. You may find the same thing.
I flew Qantas (OneWorld) on points Auckland-Christchurch return. Qantas in NZ is now operated by JetStar, Qantas' lowcost subsidiary, so they were a bit surprised when I showed up with all my gear. It was their first day flying regular schedules and so were used to 20kg maximums. My FIRST bag was 30kg! They were OK and booked by through, Qantas is a good airline (except if you're an Aussie and grew up bashing Qantas, and have never flown Delta or United domestically!)

Fly Air New Zealand out of San Francisco if possible (I always like to avoid LAX), but LAX is fine if it's the only choice.

LAX to AKL then on to Christchurch. The Christchurch flight even leaves from the Auckland International Terminal so you won't have to walk over to the domestic terminal.

Air New Zealand is a great airline. Very comfortable, good food, and great service.

The SFO suggestion is the one I use when I go to NZ. It is not offered every day of the week, but it is much better than going through LAX
