Story is doing the rounds , current suggestions are that the pig had a sub-lethal encounter with 1080 poison and these people have secondary poisoning as a result of that.

Time will tell , if it is 1080 poison related it will likely be swept under the mat and disguised as something else as our Dept of Conservation is hell-bent on pouring 1080 all over the publicly owned land it administers.

Just been reading the news about this. Thousands upon thousands of wild boar and other wild game are eaten every year in NZ. Many who do not hunt with rifle partake in wild pig hunting just using dogs and knives to stick the pig once bailed and held by the dogs. In fact pig hunting with dogs could almost be called a national sport. This is the first time I have ever seen any reference to wild game being contaminated enough to incapacitate someone so quickly.

Like all meats, wild game should be prepared properly to prevent contamination and then cooked correctly.
We do use 1080 poison here to control rodents and possums in our bush and alpine country to protect native birds and animals such as dogs are very susceptible to secondary poisoning if eating contaminated carcases but a human would have to eat huge amounts of contaminated meat or even baits laced with 1080 to have any effect.
I suspect in this case, if it is proven that the wild pig meat is the culprit, that the meat was not cared for properly from kill to table, possible contaminated from the animal gut and then undercooked.

Us kiwis would just about be non-existent if our wild game was contaminated.

Its going to be botulism. The doctors already suspect as much it seems. Pig would have contracted it and unlucky hunter has caught pig before it died.

A curious case. I'd better take extra care with the ducks, too, if that's what botulism does.

G'Day Fella's,

Yes I've seen and read about this on a couple of Oz and NZ hunting, shooting and fishing forums.

I wonder if it is deliberate, as another means to stop us from Hunting and Fishing? That's how little I trust them.

Doh!

big problem is the lack of information on offer . No details on the animal , how it was handled after its death , how the meat was stored or cooked etc

Lots of conjecture but not many truths as yet

It was botulism - it was never going to be 1080, 1080 doesn't kill with anything like the symptoms these poor people had, not that it stopped the conspiracy theorists.

Being botulism, then they didn't kill that pig that afternoon, I think they must have either taken home a dead pig they found on the road and made a curry out of it, or they were given some tainted meat by other people.

The latest information on this strange case. As is often the case everyone jumping to conclusions before any scientific proof.
The anti 1080 poison crowd also jumped on the bandwagon.

As per the latest news article tests for botulism and 1080 have both come back negative. The family report a bowl of the curried pork dish left sitting for 35 days is still fresh. This could indicate some type of food preservative was inadvertently added to the meat or to the dish during preparation. I would assume that other spices and items were likely also added to the dish prepared by the family, who knows what was contaminated.

As always it pays to wait until scientific facts are known before jumping to conclusions.

Another news item from the health authorities made the point that a human would have to eat a cereal bowl full of 1080 to have any effect. deadly to most animals particularly dogs from secondary contact through eating poisoned meat but relatively harmless to humans other than those stupid enough to make a meal of it.

Damn, I have never heard of anything like that. I have killed hundreds and hundreds of the things. I am willing to bet there is more to the story.
