Fishing on NZ south island

This is a question for our Kiwi brothers - my partner and I will be sending 6 days on the South Island in early June. We will fly into Christchurch on 4 June and will be driving a campervan around for the period of our stay.

What are the recommended places to visit and things to do, from Christchurch?

Also, what fishing is there on offer at that time of year in this area? Fishing will not be a high priority on this trip but I would like to get in a couple of hours, here and there, as we travel around. (I would love to do some hunting, too, but this trip will not be long enough to include hunting.)

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

June is not a prime time for river fishing in teh South Island, however there is opportunities to fish on the lakes. Try a boat trip out of Queenstown or Lake Wanaka. For about NZD$100-150 p/p you can go out for 2-3 hours with a reasonable chance of sucess on Trout. Theer is laos opportunities to do 1/2 to 1 day hunts.
Cheers and enjoy your time in NZ

What about salt-water fishing - any options there?

Plenty good options for Salt Water. Grouper/Hapuka, Blue Cod, Shark etc. Lots of good operaters running out of the East Coast and Malbourough Sounds. I do trips out of Moeraki and Oamaru with a couple of commercial operaters. If you want the contacts let me know.

Would have to concur with Tracker on this one.
Trout options are limit to the lakes with one or 2 of the major river being open, my home town of Wanaka has good winter fishing and we can put you onto the right people.
We also have contacts at Moeraki and Timaru if you are interested in Cod and puka fishing.
happy planning, you'll wish you had 3 weeks.
