Anyone have one of these? I always thought it was a neet number and they dropped them and stopped making ammo for them. Now i see an outfit is producing a conversion kit and ammo so you can shoot it in centerfire format. Anyone converted? Would make a good fox and rabbit round.

Why would you bother when the 17HMR virtually duplicates the 5mm Rems performance and you can get rifles and ammo for that calibre just about everywhere now?
I know, "because it's there" right. Wink

Avatar is right on this calibre. When it came out in the late 60's or thereabouts it was probably a great new calibre - but cost of ammo would have killed it . Iirc only Remington loaded it , and the few boxes of ammo you see around now have such high prices on them that you still cant afford to shoot it .

And did it do anything that the 22rf or 22 magnum didnt already do - I think not.

The new calibre loading mentioned - any further details ? One of the American gunmakers ( Cooper Arms ? ) was making a 5mm Cooper Centrefire back in the 1990's - original cases were lathe turned . Dont know if that is still in production.

The 17 rimfire will do anything that the 5mm did , and is more accessable to the masses. I think the 5mm has been consigned to the history books as one of those interesting fads that came and went - as I suspect will the 17 rf's in time. May history prove me wrong.

If fox fur prices ever made a comeback, may PETA and Greenpeace burn in hell, then I think the .17 rimfire's future would be guaranteed.

I would love to have one, as the .22 rimfires have a nasty habit of ricocheting easily and if shooting them in vine rows one has to be especially careful. A more fragile pointed .17 bullet would shatter more easily. But as always $$$ get in the way of great plans.

My .222 with fragile bullets used to do great work, but it wakes up the neighbours a bit too much.

The 5mm rimfire was dead and history three decades ago. Is there a resurgence?

John - point taken re fox fur prices . We dont have foxes so it isnt an issue here...

The 17 rfs are not quiet to fire. Definately more "crack" than a 22rf and more prone to wind drift than the advertising will suggest. But they do look like lots of fun , and if they suit your requirements then go for it .

I dont think I will own one in the foreseeable future tho.

For $75US for 100 empty cases I'll think I'll pass on the 5MM Craig...Jeez...
I can shoot the 17HMR for less than half that amount, get the same performance and I can let the spent brass fall in the dirt.

I got a .17HMR H&R single shot with a heavy barrel for 380 crackers brand new from Fishers. They are very good value.
I never use my 22 anymore, the 17 is simply miles ahead in every way.
Yes they make a bit of a bang, about the same as a 22mag, much less than my 222 though.

The 17 rimfires (especially the HMR version)are well established, they won't be going away anytime soon.
Every rimfire manufacturer in the world is chambering for them right now.

One of those funny muffler things. Smiler But doesn't change the supersonic crack.

I can shoot my .222 just in makes everyone sit up. Used to do load development on my property shooting off 40 or 50 rounds. Now I choose to do it a few kilometres away most of the time.

I have a Remington 5mm Rem. Mag and very effective on fox's, the new .17HMR is ok but the 5mm is just as good, bad marketing, I suppose. The one I have is for sale comes scoped and approx 450 rounds of ammo. I will take best offer, need money for my new Ruger No1 in .450/.400 when Ruger decides to make them.
