I am going to be in kind of a strange position in life to be retired at 41 and have some money in my pocket. I had thought of all the things I could do and I am still thinking about immigrating to Australia.

What's Alice Springs like? What about Darwin?

Like to have some land to run around on and maybe open a small business in town.

What do you think?

Alice is a hot and sh%%y desert town. In the middle of a desert. Some might like it though. OK for a day or two visit however or a Central Oz holiday.

Darwin is OK but a bit boring. For connected gentlemen there is good hunting nearby, and great fishing for virtually anyone. Lots of pretty tourist girls. The fellas that live there can comment.

Both towns have strong tourist industries.

Darwin will grow incredibly IMO as the 'gateway' to Asia for Australia over the next fifty years.

Thanks John,

I was doing some real estate searches and it looks like both have a lot going on.

Thinking about doing a 10 day Alice to Darwin drive and look next Summer. Guess I will have to see about work.

thanks,

Seth

Three or four days will pull it up,not much between the two but dust and heat.

Three days in Alice Springs will be enough.Open speed limit in NT so hire a fast car. Big Grin

My pick is Darwin. I didn't like Alice much. As Nitro said its in the bloody desert! Darwin has a very laid back lifestyle. Its not boring (HA a bloody South Australian calling Darwin Boring Wink sofa)

What do you do for a crust?

Alice is nothing special, but, they do have camels and donkeys if you can get the right conections.
Darwin has a very diverse culture and is as interesting as you want to make it, pigs and buff are available. Don't go anywhere near the Barossa valley unless you like the smell of rotting grapes. Big Grin

No rotting grapes on my property. thumb

I agree Adelaide is very boring. The tram ride to the beach is the major excitement venue. Roll Eyes

However the Barossa is a great place. I was watching my grass grow yesterday too.

Now what about Cooper Pedy? That is a rockin' place. Smiler Live in a hole in the ground (cave).

Seth,

If you do leave ten days to drive from Darwin to Alice Springs, you will six or seven days to see some sights along the way.

D99 why would you want to leave italia when they just won the world cup!!!! "Forza Italia!"

Where in italia you from?

My parents are Calabrese and my mother is in Napoli at the moment enjoying the pizza's.

She is going to Tropea in 2 days where she was born.

Anywayz like the other boys said about NT but i have no experience as i have never been there...

A small Gelato shop should do the trick as its always hot if your looking at opening a business.

Ciao

One of the fruit juice franchises in Darwin is an ideal "retirement" business.

I spent several hours in the "Rourke's Drift" pub opposite a fresh fruit franchise in 2004 admiring all the pretty locals and tourist girls in skimpy clothing going in and hanging around outside while drinking their fresh fruit juices and fruit smoothies. As did several other tables of lads on tables nearby who were doing 'rankings' of the customers.

A lot of backpacker hotels are just up the road.

Why on earth would you want to go to OZ?

Why not New Zealand instead? The country is more beautiful and the people more amiable.

You could always guide wealthy yanks on canned hunts! How about being a fishing guide in NZ?
We haven't heard about that yet. Are trophy fish caught in small concrete ponds akin to
swimming pools there? Or do divers put them on the hook for you?

No don, the Kiwi trout and salmon are luckily just like you, they grab at anything dangled in front of them. Big Grin

Thanks, Dave. I was beginning to think that
I would never find an amiable Aussie. Yes, I
know, good people can be found almost anywhere!

By the way, I wholeheartedly agree with your statement about might and justice!

Seriously Don, that's not a bad idea for Seth to look at, maybe one of the Kiwi posters in the know could help him out with a few tips...
It strikes me that there are worse ways of earning a living than helping others enjoy the outdoors.....

Cheers, Dave.

D99 why not come to Griffith in NSW. You would not get homesick as there are loads of Italians here. They all hate it when a helicopter flies over "WOP, WOP, WOP, WOP"

The wife and I just got back from a drive from here up to Alice Springs then our to Uluru and back down to Coober Pedy (where I watched the World Cup final at 3:00 a.m., in a cave with a fellow from England and another from Switzerland). The outback is pretty interesting. We saw sand and rocks and scrub and more of the same for a couple of days. Some wild camels and eagels eating road killed roos.

Have you thought about moving to Canada? There are more wild native animald to hunt there and the fishing ain't bad eather.

D99, I was in Darwin a few months ago and loved it. I have also thought about packing it up and heading for Australia. There is great hunting just a little way from Darwin, great fishing of the coast and inland. The town is nice, people are friendly and losts of girls. What more could you want?
