416SW,

Might try posting this on the Gunsmithing Forum, there is a lot more traffic there.

A quick skim-read of pages 220 +- of Hatchers makes mention of Springfields and Rock Island Arsenal rifles as being troubled by weakness in the receiver . Springfield rifles below number 800000 are known to be weak. Rock Island likewise below 285,507.

No mention of the Remington-made Eddystone receivers .

I had an Eddystone action many moons ago that had cracked thru the receiver ring and been welded - never used it because of that , and some other more daring type swapped me money for it so all was well .

Hope that helps a little , I can search for more if you want , and have a spare copy of Hatchers Notebook if you need to replace yours.. Wink

Thanks Hog killer

Muzza thanks, I'm sure there was mention of the 1917 Eddystone actions, not just the Springfield and Rock 1903's. If you could look a bit further that would be good thanks.
How much do you want for the spare copy? I still have 2 people to ring to see if I can track it down.

I believe the brittleness issue came about because the barrels were put on very tight. When the barrels were turned off they cracked the action. At least this is what I've heard and I hope it is, cause my Rigby is being built on a Eddystone action Eeker The barrel was turned off on a lathe by a gunsmith however and given a complete check over. thumb
