It woke my wife and I here in South Otago. We are about 350 miles from Christchurch. Have heard reports of damage but no injury so far. Long may that be the case. Von Gruff.

I called a couple of friends in the Aukland area this morning and they didn't even know that there was an earthquake. second-hand information suggests 2 people seriously injured by falling stuff , many roads affected with cracking , damage to water services etc I work in the water reticulation industry here and our parent company is based in Christchurch , and it appears that teams of us from the North Island may be going down to assist the clean-up operation. ________________________ Old enough to know better

Also reports of looters in Christchurch! What's going on? You guys need to be out patrolling the streets. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. If you're going t have a natural disaster, it looks like that was the one to have. Looks like all the emergency services planning and contingancys were up to scratch. Overall it seems to have been a very calmly handled incident.

This is bad stuff, though thankfully no one seems to have been killed. We were thinking of buying a house in ChCh, too. What city in the South Island is least likely to have bad earthquakes? - Paul

Gidday Guys, It has been a bloody shakey couple of days. A lot of people have lost their homes and the aftershocks are causing a lot more damage. One of the biggest problems now is the water supply is becoming contaminated with raw sewage so a few people have come down with the screaming shits. Silly buggers have yet to realise boiling water or puting a couple of dropd of bleach into the water cleans it up. Bloody townies are to dumb to look after themselves. The liquification of the ground is something to behold. Because the ground was so wet with all the rain over winter when the quake hit the soil turned to liquid and sand poured up with the liquid pushing buildings over and creating general mayhem. The girls (both with and without penises) and the kids are getting terrified each time there is a tremor. They have still got a couple of weeks to put up with. People are getting a little testy with the stress they are putting themselves under. To relieve the stress a bit I hope to go up the South Opua after some tahr this weekend. Heres hoping I can get away. No deaths is absolutely amazing. If it happened during a week day or even 5 hours earlier it would have resulted in thousands of deaths but at 4.36 am everyone was in bed and not walking around the old buildings. Also being a first world country means the buildings are a lot stronger than in other parts of the world. We also have the infrastructure and calm demenour that ensures things are put back on track rapidly without the panic and confusion that usually occurs. All is getting back to normal quickly. The airport is open so if you have a hunt booked there won't be any issues with getting here and away on the trip. You will still be well looked after and we look forward to seeing you. Hamish, it is even more amazing when you consider that the magnitude of the ChCh quake was about the same as that which hit Haiti a while back. The biggest saiving grace was the time that it hit. Just heard that the latest aftershock was up in the 5.2 range so things are still a bit wobbly. Von Gruff.

Gidday Guys, I have just spent last night shifting a mate out of his house at the top of Hackthorne Road for those of you who know Christchurch. His house has been condemned. Scratch 2 mill. Happy Hunting Hamish

Sometimes there's a lot to be said for a tent. Is earthquake resistence the advantage of the Hubba Hubbas funky frame? - Paul

Because NZ has a high risk of earthquake the building codes are pretty strict in terms of building strength. If you check out the on-line pics of the CHCH damage you will see that the older brick buildings are the ones that fell to bits - the newer ones moved and buckled but few collapsed. If I was looking at buying a house in the South Island I would favour somewhere that had a rocky underlayer rather than alluvial silt or clay - a lot of the damage in CHCH has been caused by the ground turning to porridge and houses sinking into it . ________________________ Old enough to know better
